Pumps

General question. I'm getting my first LEI kite and it is coming with a pump. Although the seller recommended getting one from walmart for cheap that would be better on my back.

So I did some looking around on Walmart and found some pumps and electric pumps. Whats the word on using electric pumps? And yes they have one for ~$25 bucks that is battery powered.

Does it matter from your experience? Obviously using common sense and not over inflating the kite but is it too much of a risk or is it dumb NOT to use an electric pump.

For Example:
Rechargable

Car pump

Meh... after pumping up a kite with the 'standard' nipples, I can see the charm in buying electric pumps.

One of the guys has one like that Coleman one and still has to finish the kite with a hand-pump. There are kite pumps for like $200 but if you search at the kiteforum.com, there's a thread with cheaper options that do the same thing...

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

Standard pump is good for a pre ride warmup ;)
One of the guys at our beach lugged down a tank a few times. He said it could fill quite a few kites. Lugging that thing around looked like too much work.

honestly the hand pump is the only way unless you got an electric, but your still going to HAVE to finish pumping with the hand pump.

http://shop.pumpkiteup.com/Volo-Kite-Pump-Air-VKPA-90.htm

interesting....a paint ball tank with some add ons.
that 90 cubic inch tank sells for about $200...so $250 isn't unreasonable.
could probably put together one for quite a bit less with an aluminum tank, but less capacity.

lol, noticed the scuba tank on their page too...who's gonna take a scuba tank with them when kiting?

but, if a $25 electric pump actually works, $250 is pretty overkill.

I've often thought about getting an electric pump, especially when I'm pumping up my 20m Waroo. Haven't bought one yet, but maybe some day. If the kite is 13m or under, you'd have to be a complete woos to use an electric pump.

i think if you were to rig up the nossle of a handpump up to a gas powered leaf blower using reducers ect.... i think you could put a really big dent in the amount of pumping you have with that 20m waroo

It doesn't make much sense spending $$$ on a pump when you are spending $$ on a kite ?

You want to pump up an LEI rock hard . I doubt a $25 electric pump will do it ?

I had a cheap ( Canadian Tire ) pump that was similar to a Kite pump. I couldn't seem to get enough pressure out of it to inflate my kite rock hard. I thought I had issues with the kite until I filled it with my Naish pump and it gave that extra couple PSI ? Like I had a completely different kite !

Pumping is a good part of your warm up. ;-)

right on BR, pump that body because you're gonna need it.

when i first started on the water, 20mph howling, pumping help wash out some adrenalin ...because it starts boiling! you're so amped.

the pump won't hurt your back, the 2001 18m fuel needs serious consideration though

So I got the pump with the kite. Feels like it puts out very little air. I'll find out soon enough if it puts out enough air soon enough.

Otherwise that Slingshot Jenna J double D looks nice! Can't find it for $30 but i'll keep searching

Academy sells pumps for $8 dollars that look like kiteboard pumps, but are better than the pumps that come with the kites:
http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_101...

All you have to do is glue+ziptie the hose to the base of the pump, and the nozzle to the hose. I usually trim away the nozzles I know I won't use. I have used these pumps for a while and they usually last longer than the pumps that come with kites (Slingshot, Ozone, and Best pumps all seem to use the same manufacturer and all have been terrible in my experience).

Similar pumps are sold at Wal-Mart and are not that much more expensive:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Stansport-Double-Action-Hand-Pump/...

You'll just have to modify the nozzle accordingly.

Kites:
2012 TS 7,9,12/2007 Waroo 3,5/2009 Kahoona 9.5
Flexifoil Ion 2 8.5
HQ Hydra 350

Ozone Zephyr 17m
