Hey everybody,

I just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. I am new to the world of kiting and very excited to start learning a new extreme sport. I am an avid snowboarder and hope to incorporate kiting into my year round activities. Currently I live in New Jersey, about 45 minutes outside of NYC. Looking forward to learning some tips and tricks from all of you much more experienced kiters.

Keep it real,

Brian

As of now you will find your self driving down the road. Looking at trees, flags (to see what way the wind blows) And open area with clean wind. this drives my wife nuts. the other kiters in the area will know the best spots. This is a great forum. Kiting is the best thing ever, if you DON'T GO YOU WILL NOT KNOW.

Welcome Brian,

Find some experienced kiters and a good BEACH (or a REALLY good inland field) to learn to fly.

Good advice and clean steady winds make a world of difference and brings down the frustration and learning curve - a LOT!

The only skills flying alone in crappy, inland winds will develop is your vocabulary (and possibly First-Aid) skills!

Welcome!

You will quickly learn that this may be one of the best forums for kiting.
Everyone on here is super friendly and there is a wide range of people experienced with everything that this sport has to offer.
This forum is the whole reason that I got into the sport in the first place.

Have fun, and DO NOT hesitate to ask questions.

Thanks for the very warm welcome!!

I live in Central Jersey(Red Bank Area) which is about 15 minutes away from Sandy Hook. As a matter of fact I have probably seen a few of you guys kiting because I love watching the sport in action. Going down to the hook and watching is actually what inspired me to get into kite boarding. It looks like so much fun :wee: !!!! I recently purchased a HQ Scout II 5 Meter training kite. I know that this is on the larger side for trainer kites but wanted to get something I can learn on and still use once I gain more experience. From what I read this kite is also good for beginning snow kiters and land kiters. With that being said, during my first few times out what wind speeds would everybody recommend I stick to?

Awesome! I was born in Red Bank :cool2:

for a 5m, I would stick to 10ish to start. That 5m will kick ur butt if u let it. I started with a 5.6m as my first kite and man, in winds over 10mph it scared the snot out of me at first. Take some time to get to know the kite in low wind first. The good thing is you are coastal, good clean winds. Will make learning a LOT easier.

Welcome Bmart/Brian! Good to see You found THE place. Great folks here as you see.

I was born, grew up, and work in Red Bank. Great town. Down by Belmar now.
As you know, Sandy Hook is the local spot. Also good spots around Seaside, Island Beach, and LBI.
Wildwood is a MUST GO Spring and Fall. Check out past WW Buggy Bash videos at the bottom here

http://www.wildwoodbuggybash.com./

I started on a 4m Scout (1st gen). Fair warning, first kite breeds many ;-)
That 5m will pull like a train over 12mph and watch for gusts. The beach is forgiving and a great place to learn, scud. jump static. A good helmet is a valuable investment. It's not if you need it but when.

Real bummer The Navesink didn't freeze up this season. We had some good sessions the past 2-3 years prior.
This was my first time (newbie) on The Navesink in Red Bank with the 4m Scout 3 years ago.
