Beefing up a board?

I acquired an older MBS board that is all I'm going to have for a while. But it seems a bit flimsy with my 210lb ars on it. Has anyone ever played around with adding a layer of fiberglass or gluing another layer of wood to the top to stiffen a board up?

Which board?

Short answer is probably going to be that it won't be worth the time and effort.

Most boards have a vinyl graphics layer on the top and bottom layer. To get good adhesion, that's going to have to come off, to be replaced by vinyl or a flexible paint after you are done, so that it is not prone to water/moisture damage later.

The additional layer is going to have to be bent to match the tip angle of the board.

To get out all the air between the old board and the new layer you are probably looking at investing in a vacuum bag and pump.

If the MBS board has a PTex base and stainless mounting inserts, you will have to drill matching holes in the new layer before you try to add it.

Depending on how thick the layer is that you add, you may end up having to replace the mounting hardware with longer bolts.

There might be cheaper ways to do it, but cutting corners could result in delamination of the new layer at a bad time and possiblly damage your board.

Maybe not impossible but lots of potential pitfalls along the way.

Have you considered keeping all the hardware and just replacing the deck? MBS Core decks are $100 and Comp decks are $150.

Used decks if good shape can be had for less.

There's a used GI Edge deck going for $75:

This board has a wood top deck. I already took off the old grip tape and painted and applied a new grip top. Easily taken off again if needed. Its just an idea, my dad does body work as a hobby(fiberglass) and my brother in law builds custom cabinetry (wood bender) so thought about taking advantage of one of the two.. Maybe just a crazy idea!!!

core 16? you want it bouncy,

i had a core as my first decent board and i'm 200#. the deck finally gave way after 1500hours+ of full bore jumps, landings and blatant disregard for my own safety.

if its already blown out there won't be any spring back of consequence....units dead. you could lam some wide maple flooring to it... BUT it'll really only be good for cruising , jumps esp. learning would shorten the patches life.

Not sure the model but it's plenty bouncy. Probably just run it into the grave and get a new deck some day..

if its bouncy then its what you want, they eventually stop bouncing then its only good for cruising otherwise your feet and ankles will be roughed up on landings and just feel dead when you step up on it

Yep, it bottoms out to the ground. Thats why i figured I cant go wrong trying to beef her up. Might try the Maple board glued to the top deck. Not sure if the glue will take the flexing, well see..
