US Source for PL parts

Bought my first buggy almost ten years ago from Fritz Gramkowski and now I want to give it to my son. The Buggy is an original PL Comp. The problem is that we live on the East Coast in New Hampshire, and big foot tires or anything larger than the standard is a must for the sand. Tried ordering tire and wheel upgrades from the only PL distributor in the area (Who happens to be right in my town) yet no response from PL in over two months.... They are getting ready to refund my money. I would prefer the larger tires etc... Can someone out there tell me where I can get parts or even new equipment in the US... Thanks in advance

Hey Dave,

It's really no mystery.
There are no PL or Flexi tires.

Right from the start it was stuff that was already available.
The 16x6.5x8 x-wide tires are used with garden tractors and such small engine machines.
The 21x12.8 BigFoot tires are a bit tougher to find and might have to be ordered.

Try to find 4-ply tires (except the BigFoot tire - only 2 ply), as they wear much better.

The issue is the rim.
Those plastic rims are #@%$#! to mount the x-wide and BigFoot tires on.

Car tire tools are too big and can break the plastic rim.
Bicycle tools are too light-weight.

I found motorcycle tire tools to be just right.

I've also started building the PhatBoy rims again.
(Took a year to get the parts from New Zealand)

Half a standard 3-piece 4" wide rim and half a BigFoot 8" rim.
The rims is 6" wide, not the standard 4", so all the tires sit wider, providing more grip.
Effectively widening your rear axle.

I've mounted 4.80x4/8 tires, 16x6.50x8 tires, 5.00x8 and the BF 21x12x8 tire.
They all fit this rim.
(I've had them made with the valve stem hole on the inside, shallow half, so the deep-dish side remains smooth and uninterupted.
Because the rims seperate, tire changes are much easier too.

These rims are for the back axle where they increase the stance (effective axle width) by 4".
These only fit the rear.
I make a standard 4" 3-piece rim for the front.

Costs are the killer.
The rears are $165 each - rim only.
The front is $140 - rim only.

Watch your tire pressures too.
Many underinflate and risk cracking the plastic rims.

We have complete big foot tire assemblies in stock and also have complete big foot buggies in stock as well as many other parts including replacement bearings in both 12 and 15mm sizes, tubes wheels, downtubes, frame rails etc...

Ordering from VleigerOp (Peter Lynn's distribution network) is a pain and can take forever to get stuff. Special orders can take a couple months to arrive.

Happy Winds!

On the subject of tires and wheels, has anyone tried to balance theirs?

We are finding that as you approach 50mph on the playa, i'm getting a great deal of bouncing or rumble. It's like a barrier and it's hard to go faster.

I'm pretty sure if i could get the tires balanced, they would go a great deal faster.

Any clues or help, welcomed.

I hear the Yakuza fixes that barrier problem you are having.
