so i bought an mbs board from mougl last jibe... rode the atb at jibe for like an hour, get it home... the tires wont hold air! Wtf right?

upon further examination, the hubs have these little plastic tabs that interlock the two pieces... well the plastic tabs are all bent over and broke! this allowed the hubes to move around while locked.... as the hubs moved against eachother, they pinched the tube, and sliced it.

Well Mougl and Dino helped me out, and sent me a new set of hubs and tubes.... i followed the directions, put maybe 3 hours of light riding on them, and the tubes are shredded again....

lol this is BS!! Crap a$$ hubs!


so im looking for an alternative.... i REALLY want a metal hub, and would LOVE no-flat tires... and the more i look at it, id like some smooth tires without treads so i could actually slide at my field (not sure if that'd work tho)


should i keep looking through my wheel suppliers for something, or should i just order some atb wheels from somewhere else (Trampa, Gi, etc)

I would suggest you buy a Flexboard, but that would be like rubbing salt in the wound. And I would never rub salt in your MBS wound.

Let me check and see if I have something in my R&D box that might work, what sizes are we talking about? spindle, wheel, tire?

I have two sets of Terraintula's in stock that I can work out a killer deal on. Shoot me an e-mail if you are interested. I believe they will fit on your MBS.

Hrm....I like the sound of a good deal, but in my thread about new ATB wheels (http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=22066&p...) Phree said "terrainutas , no! the bearing liner is NOT for kiting." Indicating that these won't stand up to kiting for long?

Any information on that?

the hubs are the mbs twistars... not sure on exact measurements.... dont have any calipers

I have a mbs something or other with a hand brake, an atom 90 maybe. I will see if anything will fit that.

the deck is a core 95... love the board.. hate the hubs

MBS Twistars.... quite possibly the worst invention in the world. For reasons that confound man and cat alike, MBS seems to have discontinued the MBS Tri-Spokes and still continue to produce the Twistars.


You are not the only PKF member to have run into problems with Twistars.

Kenny also had issues with them.

For mostly metal hubs, what's out there in order of availability are:




1. MBS Rockstar Pros (shop for Gen 2 rather than Gen 1 which had some spacer issues). Looks to be milled.
   
2. GI Terraintulas - no longer in producton but still turn up on the secondary market. Sintered/cast... probably the reason the Phree had the issues he had with them.
   
3. Manhick Pepperpots - rare, but have seen them come up once or twice in the past year. Mostly you see these come up in the UK, where they were originally produced. Milled.

Trampa Superstars have aluminum spokes inside a nylon rim. Not sure if the nylon rims are fiber-reinforced or not. The nylon rims are profiled around the centerline to reduce strain/torgue on the bolts, but have no locking tabs to break.

As far as run flats, you have to go outside to mountainboard world to get them. Several manufactures produce 200mmx50mm foam inserts and full-on solid tires that don't require inner tubes. The former would allow you to choose whatever tires you wanted. They will add weight to your rig. If you look around the Kenda and Cheng Shin catalogs you will find these. They are generally meant for things like mobility scooters.

Though they are generally meant for multi-purpose hubs like the MBS Tri-Spokes and GI Mult-Hubs, Cheng Shin slicks are pretty smooth.

This is what they look like in comparison to GI MAKs.

Note: Cheng Shin slicks are 4 ply rather than 2, so they are heavier than than what you are used to.

FWIW: Bearing swaps will facilitate mounting most hubs on the 9.5mm axle.

@ erratic winds- I had a chance to see some of the tarntulas of phrees at jibe this yr- i think they may work okay if not in sand but the way the tarantulas are designed the sand gets between the aluminum spoke and plastic hub and just disingrates them- phree should me a set with about 50hrs and they were toast. Based on that i want a hub that each side is all one piece solid aluminum would be the best but i dont know of any. I broke two crossairs at Jibe and am looking for something stronger- subbed them out with some of the mbs hubs but dont think they will hold up long either- the amount of side torision when sliding will have its way on those too, i think.

why waste your money on junk? you shouldn't buy a product and immediatly have to make a mod for it. Check out a trampa and I promise you will not be dissapointed. I've had mine since 2010 and i'm still on all of the original parts (hardware parts). Besides having to change the occasional tire after being worn out, i've never broken a single piece of kit from the board.

I have a set of the GI Vegas hubs that I got from Dakitez that I was going to use to trick out my Core 95. I upgraded to Flexboardz and so now I don't need them. I would sell them to you for what I have into them if you think they would be better for you. They have MBS bearings in them too. I think I paid $35 for them. Another option is the set of hubs it came with, but I might be missing one. I can check if you are interested.

terrantulas are for downhill , the pressure from kiting kills em. IF the bearings are sized for the alloy hub seat with out the line thing maybe ok , but an odd ball size 15$ a bearing set up, no thanks. with the set i had used EVERY session spit out a shim or 2, even the ones i epoxied.


...and that set of T's i will give you if you want. but they need liners for the bearing seats.

i'm sure there's an alloy shim that will overcome the problem ...i have not ran into it yet.

I have only had trouble with 1 mbs hub ever. I've owned MBS since 2002. Maybe I'm lighter weight? IDK.... twistars are light and work great for me.

I've had my twistars open once on me and I almost tossed em except I was broke and couldn't get anything else. I still have them on my pro90 and I estimate maybe 50 some hours of medium riding mostly and handful of really hard riding. No big jumps though cause no matter how much I tell myself I will never be no Carl the Bullet, Flyjump or Phreerider. My Jereme Leafe has the Rockstar Pros and must say that they are rock solid far superior in every way shape and form. I love my MBS boards and trucks, but I wouldn't buy another set of plastic hubs.

Those are pretty bling looking hubs right there!!!

I have a Flight 93 with Vegas hubs and I all but destroyed them… the long screws that hold the hub halves together are all bent up and warped.
