PL Comp XR+ back Support ideas

Does anybody have any pictures of some XR+ with back support mods? I found a few older threads but most of the links to the pictures are old and not working. I am currently using an EMS camp chair with the lower spars removed it works but I would like to build a more permanent solution. The VTT side rails look like the way to go but I am not going to have the cash to pick them up for a while.

It's for a Flexi, but I think will work for the XR as well.

Nice. Exactly what I was looking for. I should have searched for backrest not back support ;)

This is the drawing for the XR+. The 2 won't interchange due to differences in siderail width. I recommend adding some reclining angle for the XR+ to keep the backrest from being verticle. It was automatically reclined on the Flexi since the siderails are at an angle. You could bend up the XR+ backrest as drawn then add in the recline angle at the bottom without issue. Muffler shop could do this no problem I imagine.

I would really like to pick up the VTT XR+ side rails but between selling our house and having to find another one my hobby (fun) money is pretty much gone for the next few months . I will eventually get them but for the time being let’s see how bad I can butcher up some PVC tubing. I suck at cutting, fabricating etc. Basically if I have to build it from scratch it is going to come out crappy.

you could sew on a sleeve and insert a piece of masonite to the back of the seat like on the kite trike seat

Which is completely useless in my opinion!! No offense there to you Shortline it it directed to the poor seat design of the Trike.

last week I stripped my Kite Trike down to pieces and sanded, primed and painted it, replaced all bolts, nuts and hardware and have wider tires on the way.

While I was doing this I found that warped, broken piece of cheezy wood in the seat! I forgot about it and it made me laugh!

I am in the middle of doing the PVC seat back idea:thumbup:

I spoke to Steve last week who designed the Trike and we were talking about what went wrong with the Trike and the seat was #1. Remember those buckles? YIKES!

They are actually going to release a redesigned version of the Trike One. Minus the seat!

I'll get off the Podium now.

I am almost done with my backrest- ENTIRE PARTS were under $10!! Plus one six pack of Anheuser Bush's finest Budweiser for morale support:wee:

I do have to say it looks and works great! I will take pictures and post tomorrow. Almost makes the Kite trike look menacing!

Here are some poorly taken pics of my Buggy and the new backrest. Its PVC pipe painted with Duplicolor paint. Cost $20 for entire project and it works great. last pic shows the "T connector" and how it is held onto the frame with Hose Clamps.

I had to cut the connector in half since the connector would not slip on the rail due to the connector flange. Then I cut another piece in half and used that piece as a shim to get a tight fit. It does not move!

Also note my new sticker!:P I think it works and looks great. Plus my new wide tires I just put on to replace the barrows.

Beachrights,

Looks great, I'm thinking about doing one for a PL folder +. How did you bend the PVC it doesn't appear from the pictures that you used elbows

Home Depot- don't go in the plumbing aisle, go in the electrical aisle and it's the grey PVC for running wires. Not sure of the exact name of the piece but I was surprised when I saw it. 2 of those, 2 T connectors, 2 couplers [for on top] and you need to buy the shortest piece of grey straight PVC they have. You need to cut about 3 inches to make the 2 curved parts meet on top with the connectors.

No bending, it was the perfect shape! No elbows.

I have mine covered, but it did take some cutting/modding of the rail covers.
