2012 Ozone Access 12M
Hello everyone I am new to this site and to power kiting and would like o ask a few questions about my Ozone Access 12M. This is my 2nd kite, the
first one is a 5M made in china with no name type kite that is only a 2 line. I just got the Ozone and wanted to ask how to trim it. I flew it 2 times
so far in low winds. It seems like at 12 Oclock it goes over my head and then stalls all the time and also seems like it is always powered and I have
no way to depower. Please let me know what you might need to know in order to help answer these few questions. I can also provide pictures if needed.
thanks for your help. Alex

It's a BIG kite. Pull in the trim strap COMPLETELY to depower it or for flying in light winds (reduces the angle of attack I think). Trouble with a
fully depowered kite is it'll likely overfly the wind window at zenith and flop forward making a mess of your day. You need just enough depower so
that you can just stall the kite (get it to creep back down the wind window) when you pull the bar all the way in.

Thanks for the reply. So you are saying i need to "DEPOWER" the kite? How would I go about that? The pully system on the middle line or let loose the
break and power lines a tad? Thanks. anymore information would be great.

Hey Alex.
This is a fairly big kite, and definitely a big step up for your second kite !
I know a bit about depower kites, but don't fly them myself so i wont advise you in detail on the kite its self, there are people better qualified
than me to do that.
To depower the kite, you need to adjust the trimmer/ clam-cleat. Pullling the bar in and out adjusts the break tension.
It sounds to me that you need a bit of time with someone who knows how to fly and use these kites properly. Where are you based ? People on this forum
are all over the world, and very happy to help!
A quick question, are you using a harness with this kite ? unlike other kites, (including your first one) depower kites need to be used with a harness
otherwise they will not function properly.
Make sure you have read, and understood the manual for your kite too! It should explain some of what you need. (but is no substitution for having
someone explain and show you !)

Hope this helps,
Tim

Hey Tim thank you for the fast response. I am located in Staten Island NY. I did do a lot of research about these kites before I bought one and I do
have a harness and I know how to control the kite and depower it by moving the bar up and down. I just need to figure out how to trim it properly. If
you can let me know how to find someone in my area that would be great. Thank you Tim

Ah, okay, awesome
Im based in the UK, although the majority of people on this forum are in N America. The quickest / easiest way to find people near you is to put a
post a thread in the 'general chat' forum, with your location, or something similar in the title.
Or just head down to your local kiting spots, an see who's around ! I have helped, and been helped by kiters from just chatting to them in the spots i
fly.

That's awesome I will deft consider that. Tell me something I was just thinking about the first time I flew the 12M Access and I was on a fairly small
field with trees and brush. Do you think it's possible that the winds was not flowing properly due to the trees and therefore making the Access
unstable and fly over my head?

Choppy winds will make it more challenging to fly.
If the kite is in danger of overflying, pull the steering lines sharply to stall the kite back down.

Your intuition is correct. That's a big honkin' kite. As you learn to fly a depower, this will not be very forgiving.
Put it in the closet and buy a ~7m kite. If you don't have one, buy a helmet and wear it.
Trust your gut on this.

Ok. Is there a kite you can recommend for the time being? When I flew this 12m it seemed to be very very powerful but thought if I depower it a bit I
would be ok . Thanks for all the advise

yea thats a great kite but you want to park it for a while fly something else....must of been scary as crap when you first put it up.....id have made
in my pants........you will dominate that kite someday, but dont let it hurt you now.. i agree you gotta put in some time on a smaller Dp or 4line
.....trimming a kite requires a feel that needs to be developed over time not just read... not that its hard to do.....you just have to know why yor
doing it......i'll fly w/ you at some pt.....im close

abkayak thanks for the concern budd. To be honest with you i wasnt really to scared to fly it, I was more excited. I wanna tell you a bit of what
happened. I saw someone flying one this past summer and thought I would give it a try so I go a 5 meter kite. It was great but now good enough I
learned to fly it and got bord with it really fast. I am 6 foot 1 at 215 LBS so one day I had the 5M with me and decided to go fly at the beach. Once
I got there I saw 2 other people flying male and female. Spoke with them and they let me fly their kites. The first was a 7M and the 2nd was a 12M I
caught on very fast and had a blast flying them, then decided to get my own and got the Ozone. I flew it 2 times now in low winds and I love the
feeling of the kite but I have no one to fly with and show me some tips and tricks on setting the things up and trimming it. I'm not trying to by any
means to get ahead of myself but I think I can handle this Ozone once I learn every function inside and out. And to be hinest with you I spent $1,200
bucks on this thing and Don't want to spend more for a smaller one for the time being. If I have to I will but if I don't have to I would rather not.
Thanks again guys. you all have been very helpful.

Don't make the mistake of assuming that depoweed means "no power".
Even a depowered kite can kill you. A 12m kite will just kill you sooner and (usually) without warning.
A smaller depower kite will be a safer course. Keep the 12m for now. When you're ready for it, you can kite with confidence and safety.

Thanks for the feedback Joedy. It sounds like all of you say the same thing and I think i'm gonna do just that and hide it for now. Can you recommend
something smaller for now but taking my height and weight into consideration. 6 foot 1 at 215 LBS.

I'll give you some perspective:
I'm 180 pounds and a 10m Flysurfer had absolutely no problem yanking me airborne without preamble. But then again, I've flown this kite ststic in
gentle winds (less than 8 knots) without concern.
My point is that you must always consider the winds first and foremost.
A smaller 3-5m Depower would be a place to start shopping around for.
Don't be afraid to buy a used kite. There are quite a few good deals currently underway in the For Sale forum here on PKF.

That would be an awesome kite to learn the ropes on. You could throw it around and get a great understanding how the depower works.
Another option that I was gonna mention was a 6m access. I learned depower on mine and still use it a lot. Probably one of the most reliable kites in
my quiver.
.....that's a really nice looking 12m BTW. Gonna be super great once you get over this little but very important hurdle.

Well I've got my 10m Access 2012 now. But I'll definitely wait for some snow to take it out the first time. It kinda scares me because im only 70kg
and I have only little experience. I'll propably be fine if I take it out in <10mph
Luckily, I took kitesurfing lessons last summer. Here's my little experience about different winds and kites.
Day1:
Wind was over 25mph.
1st kite: 1.2m trainer. Fast as f*** and made me take a few steps forward.
2nd kite: 2m trainer. Much slower and much more powerful. As we tried dry waterstarts (getting up by "dropping the kite") i had a painful experience.
I "dropped" the kite from the zenith and my right hand slipped off the bar. --> I didn't let go and the kite looped twice which ended in a 5m long one-handed "superman" and me lying next to a rock.
Day2:
Wind 10-15mph
We flew 7 and 9m helixes. MUCH easier and more controlled than that 2m trainer.
That's why I'll stick to light winds and bigger kites. I'm not going to buy a 3m dp just be able to start kiting in crazy winds. But I'd also
recommend you and everyone else to either, take lessons or find someone who is willing to teach you the basics.
