I will be doing the buggy thang soon and want to be prepared as far as safety goes.

Does anyone have recomendations on what safety equipment to purchase and maybe where to get it?

Depends on experience, of course. I prefer a full-face motocross helmet, but some kind of lid (brain bucket) is very good advice. I also wear a full set of pads (elbow and knee). Some go so far as to wear motocross armor, but they are usually pretty extreme. I like long pants/sleeves too, cause sometimes pads slide around on a wipeout and the longies still offer a little protection from minor road rash. Long sleeves/pants also help with the sun for the pigment challenged among us. Shades are nice too. I try to bring some large bandages, maybe some gauze cause $H1# happens. Maybe gloves...

If you are new to this there is no need to go hog wild on your first trip. Just bring all you think you might need, and realize that you WILL either forget something, or wish you had something. Luckily, we are a sharing bunch and someone usually has a patch kit or pump or wrench if you forget yours. The next trip you will be a little better prepared. Pretty soon you get to graduate into a full size van or even a trailer to haul around your toys...... I am only at the van stage LOL! See ya there!!

A lid is a must if your anywhere near powered up, elbow and knee pads are a solid idea as well.

Depending on your age, you might also want to invest in some pads for your hips, they are very light weight and go on under your jeans. I only fell from the seat to the ground and was dragged about a foot. The rash on my hip took a month to heal. I had on a pants, long sleeved shirt, helmet, both elbow and knee pads, gloves, and eye ware.

Don't forget sunglasses .I use in addition to above sixsixone pressure suit,but that is because I do freestyle,however it is better to have more protection than later be sorry.Keep in mind that dry lakes are good skin removers when things go wrong.It is not as forgiveing as beach or grass.

Just realized I only answered part of your quesiton.... I got my motocross hemlet off eBay for about $45. Adult size pads can be gotten at anyplace like Target, Walmart, Scheels, Big5, Sports Authority, maybe REI, whatever sports shop is near you. If you decide you need full body armor, then a dirtbike shop is the place to go.

I am only interested in cruising along straight back and forth. I am not into the freestyle thing nor do I even have the experience.

I was looking at a skateboard helmet type. I was going to get chin guards since I noticed that when I remove my feet from the pegs the sides of the pegs hit you right in the chin.

I used to have a full motorcross helmet. Seems like that would be hard to see the kite.

Yeah, for sure with the sun glasses, Usually I wear a pair of tinted safety glasses, It helps that work supplies them for free, they wrap around nicely and offer tonns of protection from stuff flying off the front wheel and getting in your eyes.

They're also durable enough to not shatter when you bail hard.
