Wind speeds in you area .........

What kind of winds do you frequently have?

This question pop up a lot ..... In my opinion most of time all of us get 0-10mph conditions most of days and 10-20mph make us happy few days a month with single days above 30mph ....
Am I wrong ????
If you ride inland this is reality most of times plus you need to deal with gusts .... You gaining few MPH when on shore with way cleaner wind
Few locations gets wind Boost ..... like OBX or channel between mountains ....
In summary I think most of us fly in same conditions ...

Lets see....

Most days wind speed in you are is ..........

Hahahahahaaa Poor Kober is going stir crazy.

I'm assuming we're talking averages right? Our winds on what we would term an all round "good day" are usually about 15mph gusting to 25mph. It very rare here not to have some kind of gust factor and it's very common to have a gust factor that is double the base wind speed. Example: blowing 15mph gusts to 30mph or 10mph gusting to 20mph.

On the upside the gust frequency is relatively even. The gusts are pretty spread out a lot of the time unless you have a series of fronts moving through. The thermic activity in the mountains is a big factor in what our winds act like and is why we a lot of wind reports here are good for reference but not very accurate. You never really know what the wind is doing until you are at the launch point and see it first hand. More often than not we have some amount of wind even on high pressure days.

The last three seasons have been lower winds than we've seen in the last decade. It used to be the a 7m open cell foil and 10m-12m Arc were my goto sizes. Now (inpart to the broad power range) My goto is a 15m-19m Arc and 9-12m foils. If I didn't have the 24m Phantom2 last season I would have been dead in the water about a third of the season.

its gusty much like feyd says but we are hardly below 10 and if its blowing over 25 you don't want to be out in it be cause its gusting and luling huge due to thermals in the sumer time
on that note i have riden the smoothest 10 to 15 i have ever seen here 500m inland in the past week today is 15 gust 17 all afternoon
well got to go and ride:bouncy:

NOT AVRAGE .......

If you have most days below 10mph and few 40mph days average is raised dramatically and you and up with wind speed that did not exist in that time period and that is NOT wind speed that you expect most of time in you area ..... What I am trying to show here is that we use large kites the most and skilled kiter should invest in big foils that will return most of you $$$ in action ....

MPH .... from moment I start kiting everything I read was shown in MPH until I start riding water ..... and since I am from Poland , I use kilometers on European forums ....

..... we have 30-40mph wind tomorrow ..... time to get ready ..... cant wait !!!!!!

Atlanta area typically has 0-10,... Typically the forecast will dictate a wind speed and I find it to be 3 to 5 mph less than predicted gusting to the predicted wind speed,... That said, I try not to go out unless there is a forecast in the 9 - 10 mph range,...

Today is the anomaly with 20 mph winds gusting to 30/40 mph,... Holy schniekies!!!!! :singing::tumble::singing:

I'm going to take a nap now

My local coastal weather station averages for December so far.

Average temperature 4.2 °C
Average humidity 90 %
Average dewpoint 2.6 °C
Average barometer 1008.9 hPa
Average windspeed 11.3 mph
Average gustspeed 12.0 mph
Average direction 260 ° ( W )
Rainfall for month 2.73 in.
Rainfall for year 27.20 in.

I voted 10-20mph as December has been unusually quiet. 10-20 would be about right although wind speeds to 40mph are guaranteed at least a few days per month.

Tomorrow it's forecast to be 38-50mph with rain. I will be out with the buggy as usual, battling against the elements, oh yeah! :)

Def 0-10mph majority of the time. Here we are inland so you can bet on gusts doubling that figure on most days. Seldom take out the 7m frenzy, 11m is my main go to foil. Would love to snatch a 14m montana to increase my days out. My metric learning has increased dramatically since joining this forum:bigok:
