it looks like the fork has removable ends

Not sure. To me it looked like the side attachment point for the front fender.

If you are talking about the black line making the fork look like the bottom half can slide out .. its a piece of tie wrap holding the fender to the fork. :smilegrin:

OK... that's what it looked like when I zoomed in on it. Kind of surprised it's not a more formalized clamp/bracket.
