Kiteboarding on PKF?

hey what's up guys. I am getting ready to start kiteboarding this summer and wanted to know if there is anyone here that can answer a few questions I have. Reason I'm asking is because this forum I know is more for land kiting. Thanks a bunch you guys have been very helpful since I signed up.

Not being rude, but you should have done the research on the kite before you bought it ;)

Beginners board - get the biggest one you can find. It'll become your lightwind board when you get better.

Search the For Sale thread here and on other forums.

I did my research on the kite and didn't find to many reviews. Plus I got the kite for a crazy price so bad or good I couldn't pass up. I normally do much research about everything I get into but sometimes can't find enough.

Crazy prices usually mean you'd have to be crazy to buy it :( and you probably should have passed it up!

if I can't find any information, I tend to forget the product. Usually

What year is it? 11m and 200lbs... 15 knots and a big board, you might be lucky...

I know what you mean budd. I said the same thing but decided to chance it. I think it's a 2010 but I have to double check. Once I get it I post up some pictures. I figured if there's not enough wind for me to ride I give it to my girlfriend that also wants to get into the hobby. She's a big smaller 5 foot 1 @ 115 lbs I think. Got my fingers crossed for this one.

Oh, THAT kite... http://www.kiteboardingreview.com/kitereviews/9-best/64-best...

There's one of the local riders with one - if he spent as much time flying it as he did repairing it he'd... err... spend a lot of time riding.

I'm sure they're not all that crap. The guy is a bit of a kook too - insists on making his own bars and using them with new kites and they never fly right

best used to be know for cheap and crappy quality but have really improved now so if the kite youve got is an early kite, expect it to have loose stitching and alot of wear. the bularoo was originally targeted at landboarders so it has a few more places were it is reinforced.
the biggest bit of advice i can give you is to get some lessons from an instructor or at the very least have a fly with somebody who knows what they are doing.

Yeah Carltb I found a post that said the build quality wasn't the best but I spoke to the guy I bought it from he said that the tube was leaking and he had it replaced by a much better one this past season. I just can't wait until it arrives so I can check it out. And yeah 140x40 sounds good but it is all about the motion in the ocean if ya know what I mean. Haha thank you guys for always being so helpful. Also can you tell me one more thing. The pump I bought has a psi Gauge on it how much do you pump the tube to? I won't be using the kite on water anytime soon but I do want to blow it up and try it static.

Pump up to drum-tight, it's usually 11-13 psi. I flick my tube with my finger, when it makes a solid "thunng" rather than just the "fwap" of finger vs nylon, it's full.

Make sure you have and use the leash on the pump, it's there for a reason!

I still think a 140x40 would be a higher wind board for 210lbs - especially with an 11m kite. If you got a flat-water spot, you'd be looking at 20-25 knots to easily get moving...

Pump the kite up so it'll stand on a wing tip without folding. Ignore the gauges, they're never accurate.

Large "door" style board sized 150-164 makes all the difference when learning and speed up process a lot ..... YOu need to expect to pay more for big used board then lets say 140.... but its worth it .... You will use it in low wind days often and doubles you days out kiteboarding .....
As above .... Best its better now but older kites did not shine with built quality ..... Pump up you kite and inspect all stitches and valves .... Keep it inflated for few hours to make sure it holds air ....

When you were mentioning a beginner board I thought of Kober's 2012 glider. I don't know for sure it would be the best beginner board or not but my bet is yes. It would get you going in lighter winds that you would probably be more comfortable in. It would certainly be your light wind board in the future. It is a board I would love to have. I bet I could squeeze out a couple more rides in low wind on that thing compared to my board. Mine is a 145x48 and I wouldn't go much smaller than that for over 200lbs and a beginner board. Especially with an 11m kite. J

Thanks Kober and Stetson. That was very useful information the only problem I'm having it having to spend a crazy amount of money on a board. I looked around and the cheapest I found in those bigger sizes is around 400 to 700 bucks. My wallet won't allow me to do that for the time being. I'm thinking of selling my 2012 ozone access 12m that is brand new to but all this stuff and maybe another kite like a 17m to go with my 11m. I bought the ozone as a first kite brand new and only now realize I have no use for it. I wanted to snow kite but that not working out at all due to the fact I live in ny and I don't know what in the world else I can use it for. Do one of you maybe know someone willing to do a little trading? My ozone for a water kite and a board maybe?

Is that an Epic Oxygen, stetson?

This is a money sport - you spend a bunch to get into it but if you look after it and your luck holds, it'll serve you for a long time; but you gotta invest first, gear and lessons. Spend what you have to, to get a decent product - going for the cheap options is usually more expensive in the long run... and you'll be lucky to get your money back on stuff you sell :( so choose carefully. If you're afraid of shelling out... this isn't the sport for you

Not to mention how much time you have to invest in it too... if the wind is right, be prepared to say "Sorry, I'm off to the water" no matter what else you have on :D at least for a couple of years...

Oh while I think of it - another option is to just make a plywood board. Cut a 170x50 rectangle, round off the corners and edges, add fins and pads'n'straps and do your learning on that. It won't be great, but you won't notice the difference.

And I do believe there's a character around who'll do custom boards for a great price - there's a thread on here about it. Drewcolous (sp?) has one I think, PM him for the price...

If you watch out for sales on old stock, you *may* get a new boarder cheaper... but I wouldn't be on it. You can choose all your specs too...

Do boards generally get cheaper in the winter time or do they hold price firm?

Cheezy I read a post about his work. He sound legit and I might consider writing him for a custom but the review I had seen was written by a newb rider and I wanted to know if the boards are worth the price from some who knows boards.
