bike rack to carry buggies on a car

So, I have a few bike racks at home and I am considering using one to transport a buggy but firsat wanted to know if anyone else has tried it. I have a hyaundai sonata 2001. I was going to attach the back axle of the buggy to the bike rack and strap down the front on the roof of the car.

idea/suggestions/feedback?

I use bike mount to transport my KiteTrike ...... 3h trip to WBB with no problem
I would not use it for heavier buggies ...
Rear axle is attached on both sides to frame under bumper with straps and additionally with heavy duty bike security cord just in case if buggy decides to dismount .....

This was my first rack. It was a bike rack I picked up off craigslist and just made a couple easy mods to make it work. It even swung open to the side. I had a blazer at the time so it made it easy to access the back tailgate area.

Really Kober?! An A8 and you strap a Kite Trike on it? You should have an Ivanpah Pro on that car!

Then again I drive a Saab and it's been known to have a Kite Trike strapped on the roof!

Guess our "budget" buggies gives us money for nice cars:frog:

I use a Thule bike rack on the roof- the rear wheels sit in the spot a bike wheels would sit, use the original ratchet straps to hold the frame down and the front wheel gets "locked" in a custom vise that is attached to the front crossbar. It works excellent!
I can't find pictureswith the buggy on it but the pic below shows the rack I use.

I have a Honda fit (our shuttle car) 55,000 miles on it in a year and half...I love it though...I'm currently in the thinking process of making a rack for the top...Here's the idea so far and you can run with it as you'd like

If you have a Thule or yakima crossbar rack system already....I am going to purchase a 10" pvc tube and cut it into basically thirds lengthwise (this will let me make two) I can possible give one away at the prize table at WBB this year...anyway...

I will run this down the center of the rack. Attach it to the crossbars using U bolts...This way I can approach the car, lift up the front wheel into the tube, then pick up the rear axle and slide it forward without it touching my car or falling off the sides. (no scratches on top). The rear axle will then either rest on the crossbars or I will fabricate a piece much like the top of a work out bench that holds the dumbbell. This will let me just drop the rear axle into those. (almost the shape of what they are using on the hitch to hold rear axle) Then just a nice system to strap it down with and I'm off...

Doesn't need paint, durable and rust free...I'm rather handy at tools and machining so this might not be for everyone...If you need advise on how to cut a 10' pipe nicely and shape give me a shout.

BEC- looks like we posted at the same time- you might not need the PVC deal [but I like the thought process!] just use the "trays" as shown above. You can adjust the width so the frame rails of the buggy sit in them. I guess it depends on how heavy your bug is- I can lift and sidemount.

The front of the buggy is attached by running a bolt through the holes in the adjustable frame on the buggy. I'll post a picture later so you can see- it's hard to describe-

I have a sunroof and was VERY scared of dropping the buggy on it but once I figured out to put the frame in the wells 1st it has never been a concern again. Plus I can look up and see the buggy in transport if there are issues....like it is not there!:puzzled:

This too is a great idea on how to run the front wheel down the length of car, however.....I do not own the system for holding down the bikes so...this would be a substantial investment... (x2 bike channels and hold down). The tube new is 50.00 dollars. I'm checking craigslist daily to see if someone has some for sale or piece left over. I can also produce x2 out of the deal..I need a 6' run...This puts my front wheel over the windshield by about 12". I have a wide axle flexifoil so the rear axle is actually wider then the car itself and a bit longer then the standard model...I'm doing this so I can still open the back hatch without rack interfering. I also will only be using the rack locally...if running long 8 hr trips etc I'd rather take the thing apart and transport...better gas mileage and less wear and tear on the buggy itself. (summer time is pick-up truck) just roll it in.
