Awesome... I've been wondering if this could be done with a FB foil... How deep was the water?

I'm going to take a nap now

Yes, This is how Flash Austen started out. Flying a big old Flexifoil .

One of Scott's tips when he was on here was to take a mesh bag along to stuff your foil and swim in so it doesn't become a sea anchor.

The thing I have trouble getting my head around is why skim boards work well for low wind ?

nice, doing the same today hopefully

BR ..the width and the slick bottom. they will plane at very low speed , with a quick "step" start you can go in marginal winds nicely esp. in the tidal pools w/ light on shore breeze. when atb is not an option and you got some breeze fun IS available

How big was the kite, and could you go upwind?

I'm thinking my current 5-meter open-cell FB with a $30 skimboard is all I need to kitesurf. :P

I need to pick up a skimboard. I was out there at that spot yesterday. Tide was low so it left a shallow channel. I kitesurfed the channel with my spleene door but the fins caught on the sand a few times. The skimboard would have been fun to try.

High Wind would be high speed, high speed on a skimboard would put you more on top of the water and harder to hold a line. just my guess.

The thing about scimboarding with a kite is speed control and hitting a sandbar at speed rips you of the board resulting in injury, not as easy as it looks. hats off to huston as he has obviously paid his dues.

Lol definitely paid my dues I learned real quick to stay on an edge unless I'm trying to do spins, the board can definitely get away from you if your not paying total attentiontto it but iI have yet to ride a better board for light wind , not even a spleen can compare. I shot some more footy ill try and post soon . I'm glad you guys liked it. Thanks for the replys

I would like some video of how you get started and jibes, please. I would probably have to stop and start again to go the other way.

Also some info on what makes a board good to use or what qualities make it a bad board to use for this. Thanks. I have been wondering about trying this myself especially when I am at the coast.

its an HD video, skimboard start, video

stetson, basically you need a running start in shallow water victoria skimboards are nice and floaty/foam injected so they dont sink. you learn to move around on the board and use its edge to steer in the direction you want to go. Dont ever let your body weight even out over the whole board, you will loose the board. it take practice but there is no greater feeling than riding a skim.

theres a dedicated group of kiters who only kite strapless i think its losethestraps.com

Kami not necessarily, it just sucks when you loose your board in deep water you have to body drag to go get it and i alway feel like shark bate dragging out in the deep so. its the same principal when starting in deep water with a skim than with a twin tip, your legs will float/sit up top on the board until you dive your kite, lean back and your off remembering to stay on an edge.
