There was a recent posting from the tropics about some newbie who cut his overpowered kite loose and it hit the power lines and destroyed itself. Tried a quick search but couldn't find it.

The tree directed all the power of the kite into vertical motion. Poor guy. Good thing he is okay.

How can you tell if you are over powered on lei's? My arc fidget around at zenith and the shoulders move a lot too. All of that can be felt trough the bar. Lei just look as if they are normal then you get a burst of power. Arcs do that too, but they have less sled boosting than lei, so there is less over all pull.

I'm not saying Lei's are bad. I've never flown one and all of this is based on videos and what I have read.

B-Roc, here you go-

search "kite crash" on vimeo and it is the 8th result :P

Arcs - Charger I 8m, 10m, 12m, Venom I 13m - F-Arc 1200, 1600
Single Skin - Born-Kite LongStar2
Fixed Bridles - Pansh Legend 4.5m - Peter Lynn Voltage 3m

I once traveled past a tree too close at speed. Tight spot between the tree and a statue. I thought I was past but it grabbed a brake line. Before I could comphrehend anything I was drawn backward and up into the TOP of the tree ! The kite nosed into the ground and I popped the safety but there I was 10ft up in a tree and not a scratch. :o

Just to make sure something got bruised , the local kite shop's free trainer night crew showed up right then and bruised my ego. ! :(

It was crazy and I was so thankful I was O.K.. One of those, what the heck was I thinking moments ! Naturally, I have never passed above that tree again. :duh:

EDIT: Snake beat me to it.

But while I'm at it, here's another video for beginners to watch before they consider an oversized LEI as their first kite, OR high winds for the kite size they chose during their first time out:

The guy in Russia seems to have done that on purpose. Awesome video but really stupid and I'm sure all those who lost power as a result of it weren't happy.
