slingshot ranger vs new depowers

So i am thinking of getting a new kite and wanted to know if anyone has flown both the slingshot ranger 12 m and the new hq Montana or ozone frenzy
how fast do these newer kites move across the window, how much more or less lifty are they than the ranger and what is there wind range like.

I plan on using the kite for land boarding and hoping to get into jumping.

First of all, I never knew Slingshot actually made depower foil kites. :o

Secondly, I just spotted this thread comparing the kite to newer ones like the Frenzy and Montana you mentioned. They kind of like the Slingshot, but much prefer the newer foils.

@shorty- the newer technology of the montanas (v and up) will make the kite fly faster and the ability to turn it means that it will have more lift. I am an arc flyer mostly but i did fly the montana 7 for a couple of months last summer and its a great open foil kite plenty of float and lift (once you figure it out- very different timing than my arcs) I was checking it out as a low wind kite- which it is but i realized that if i cant fly my arcs the wind really is not that good for anything other than mowing the grass on a landboard. I decided if i was going to fly a foil it was going to be fixed bridle in a buggy and wait another day for landboarding

I would vote against a semi-closed cell foil in the sub 10mph range. Better stability when inflated but need some preinflation to launch and I find them a pain to pack up in their upper limits as they retain power on the ground (so they can pop ground stakes) and they can be a pain to roll / fold up when the wind is blowing and they deflate slowly or you unzip them and sand enters as air leaves the kite)

I've said it before and will say it again... am I the only guy who still likes slower turning kites? I think they make jumping so much easier as you don't whip them around but rather redirect them, position them and pull the bar in and then you don't have to wickedly redirect them either. I hate it when I read that each new model flies / turns faster than the previous. I don't want my 10m in 12mph winds zipping around like my 4m in 30mph winds. I like mellow kites with lift that don't rely on wicked speed and redirects to jump. But that's just me.

FWIW: You might want to do a search on this very forum for the Slingshot. There are more than a few threads on it. Feyd, Flyboy15, erratic winds, and a couple of others have owned a Ranger at one point or another and the reviews were favorable.

Here are two of the threads:

The general consensus was that it was much better after modding with extensions and compared favorably with the Frenzy (after the mod) of the same vintage.

That said, time marches on, and each year HQ's and Ozones get incrementally better with infinitesimal canopy refinements.

A new kite is going to be a new kite, but unless you are looking for bleeding edge, there's generally a lot of enjoyable flying time to be had on older wings... generally at a much lower price point.

ATB,
Sam
