newbie landboarder

I've been flying my HQ Rush 300 static for some time and I think it's time to get moving. I was going to go towards water but I can't afford lessons and gear right now. I'm thinking of picking up a used scrub mountain board. I weigh about 145 and will be flying on hard packed sand and some grass fields. I know almost nothing about landboarding. Do I need a larger kite? Are scrub mountain boards good boards for kiting? Bar or handles? Feel free to throw in any other advice a newbie should know.

Welcome , you came to the right place to get started.

Check out lesson the videos that member Carltb has put together on Utube . They are in there among his others.

Also take a look at the written tutorials that Angus has put on www.coastalwindsports.com .

Scrub is a manufacturer and makes boards for kids to pro's . They are a good enough brand. Not as popular here as overseas. It depends on what model you have found how good it is.

Your Rush is tuned to be more of a trainer kite. It will work as an engine but that is not it's designed purpose. It will take a lot of wind and make learning more difficult than with a larger kite designed to pull you.

You want to buy the kite in a size that works for your average winds. Depower kites are the more common choice with ATB riders but you can use fixed bridle kites as well. It becomes a bit of a personal / economic choice. Expect to need 3 kites for low , average and high winds. NO single kite does it all.

Good news is the kite you have will work for high winds ( although you may want a different one down the road ) . Get the one sized best for your average winds and save for a low wind kite. Fixed bridle tends to be a bit cheaper and you don't absolutely have to have a harness . Although I recommend one.

Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.
Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.
Flysurfer : 19m Speed 2 SA, 7m Pulse
Peter Lynn :18m Phantom, 15m Synergy, 10m Synergy, 1200 Farc, 460 Sarc, 130 Tarc, 5m Peel, 4.2m , 6.4, 8.5 C-Quads, 3.5 LS2 single skin.

Rides: Flexi / P.L. Frankin'Buggy , Shaped + straight skiis, sand skis, Coyote blades. Core 95 ATB. RKB R2 ATB .

Welcome , i do Kitelandboarding all the time , and i would recommend MBS comp 90 or MBS pro 90 , because the flexibility when you landing its 4 .
Dont buy any flexibility 1,2,3... Because with are 145 pounds
Talking about kite you can stay with HQ kites that are great , i will recommend you , the montana 7 mtrs ... Or the Apex like second choice .

Buy a harness Ozone for land the one that used for snow , thats great for first harness very confy .
