If this wind meter has no electronic parts how does it work? makes sound that the phones ear piece then picked up on?Seems like for 45 bucks I would rather just buy a real one.

Some of this some of that and a little bit of everything.

The Vaavud wind meter contains no electronics, but still connects wirelessly to your phone... Wait, what ??

Yes, you read it correctly :-) The secret is two small magnets in the rotor. The magnetic field sensor in the phone can detect when they rotate, and by using algorithms normally used for sound processing, the rotations can be converted to wind speed. Complicated engineering, made user friendly and simple. In fact, nobody has utilized the smartphone magnetometer in this way before.

And from watching the kickstarter video it doesn't have to be plugged into the phone to work, just near it.

While I think its pretty nifty (especially that it goes into the 3.5mm jack :) ) in my opinion it's completely pointless!

You can get a cheap, but specific anemometer for less than it costs. Here's the things that bugs me, that means way you don't have to have your 500 dollar (minimum) phone / tablet out on the beach / field when your setting up or need to check.
Perhaps my beach is different, but sand gets everywhere. I don't want to be getting my phone out and playing with it with sandy hands and stuff.. Especially as you're going to have to play with the headphone jack! I take my phone with me, in case of an emergency, but it is tied up in a freezer food bag, in the internal pocket of my buggybags bag ! I don't get it out until I'm back at the car.

I don't know... It's cool, don't get me wrong, but to me it seems more of an design project than actually for the end user..

Already saw that awhile ago; still can't believe it's $70 for half a functioning wind meter. :o

I'll just stick with my $40 wind meter from Fry's, thank you.

iPhone Shaka

Hey Bladerunner
Shaka is producing a Wind Meter Device for the iPhone and a app to download. The wind meter device Shaka is much smaller than the vaavud wind meter device.

I actually threw some $$$ toward the kickstarter program. Hopefully mine will be here by August. When it gets here, I'll post a review, but I like that the size /form factor is the same as our atmospheric instruments.
