Hello from St.Louis, Mo - USA

Hello,
Just been thinking of sewing up my own kite. I came across the power kites on youtube after looking at kite fishing etc.... Neat stuff.

Anyhow I sew hammocks and have a company I order some 100+ yards of material at a time to make hammocks. Anyhow, looking at stitching up my own power kite. I use dynema and amsteel blue for my hammocks etc. I have access to all the materials and tools to do whats needed to make a kite.

I have everything except a pattern.......

Anyone have a pattern?

Also, Is there anywhere in the St. Louis area that has power kite meetings so I can get a feel for the kites and which ones to buy etc.
I kayak and was possibly thinking of using this with a kayak. Its @ 80lbs and 16' long running up or down the river. I would need something that can go upwind as well. The winds here go west to east.

Not sure where you are located but you should be able to find a local shop that can get you a power kite already made. It is always best to support your local shop whenever possible. If you don't have anyone local, there are several of us on here that can get you set up.

My shop is www.awindofchange.com and we deal with most major brands and have a huge inventory. Most orders ship the same day and all orders over $200.00 are free shipping!

If you do decide to sew up your own kite the awesome! The NPW is a great one to start of with. You can find many patterns and info by just googling NASA Power Wing kite or NPW kite plans.

Hope that helps and welcome to the greatest power kite forum on the net!

If you want to go through the sometimes-arduous process of building a kite, go for it! It's a challenge and rewarding. But if you wanna fly, go buy a cheap new or used 3m trainer kite from Kent (+3) or in the classifieds here or on craigslist , eBay, etc.

Welcome to the forums!

I hate to rain on your parade ,but I kayak fish and Kite everything. You cannot hold an edge against the sidepull of the kite, which is required to convert side pull into forward motion. Basically, it makes it easier to cause you to go forward than pull you sideways. All you will do is get turtled.... Look up the "Bernoulli effect" . What you need to pull a kayak is a sled kite not a foil.

But a 4 line foil is not required. A decent size sled kite will do,and it wont crash in the water and become a sea anchor. A sled kite is a one liner,as long as you have wind it will stay aloft and pull you. Plus ,it's a hell of a lot cheaper than most decent foils.
