Only use the stainless on the part coming out of the receiver for strength, build the rest with steel. That's how I do it!

Thanks for the U2U heads up! It's perfect for the BF down tube for my Libre. Well, if you are coming for the DBBB this year then it'll work out perfectly :P.

Edit: Actually, I just measured my down tube and it's 1.5"...so these probably won't fit.

Seems like an easy fix to that would be redo the clamp plates where they clamp up to the downtube? You'd have a beefier connection & a bit more weight in the centre/front end of your buggy however that may not be a bad thing:smilegrin: esp if it improves tracking + your top end speeds you'll no doubt be all :D good with that.

Why is that? there is no noticeable difference between 316L and 304. Are there any markings on it ,or a spray painted color on one end?

I use a 110 mig and welding 1/4" is doable but it's pushing the limit of the machine's capability. If you can weld both sides it's ok, but I'm not sure of its structural integrity. I personally wouldn't recommend it.

Not to mention you'll have to buy stainless wire for your machine, and I'm not sure if they make stainless in flux-core if that's what your machine takes.

Weldngod would be the better man for that question, but that is MHO.

Thoughts WG?

Heat it with a torch first, then the arc does not have to heat the metal before you get good penetration. Are you talking stick or mig? And yes ,you have to get stainless electrode,be it wire or stick.

I thought you might say that :)

Provided you have an oxy-acetylene torch right? Or is there another means of heating it up?

dont forget the oven, done a bit of preheating when the wife was out. Use welding gloves and run fast, or weld in the kitchen. Did that once, just before the new floor was put in.:o

I can just imagine you welding in the kitchen .. haha. I welded my motorcyle in my apartment in college once ... burned a nice hole in the carpet.

^^^see above...and, would like to buy a welder...if i go 110 i can work in my garage..but if i go 220 im stuck w/ working outside.....now i do not weld yet...but i also have a few hundred ft of gal pipe i figured i would practice with before i got to the pricey stuff....first world pblm i know..but whenever i look at that stainless i see buggies and trailers and uknow... i keep thinking about the Lincoln 100 or 135's which are for sale daily on CL...i compare them to stick units which seem so much less cool but am really after best tool for the job...unlike kites i only want 1 welder in my life
