How much to make a NASA wing?
I've wanted to try a nasa wing on short lines for longboarding in the park. Just wondering how much roughly all the materials would cost to make one
big enough to roll my 200lb butt around. Figure when we get our week of 40 below this winter, it might be a good time for the wife to teach me how to
use her sewing machine.
what I fly/ride:
19m Flysurfer Speed 2 SA
12m Flysurfer Speed2
6m Ozone access xt
1.5m Ozone imp trainer
144cm Airush Switch
152cm lib tech skate banana
MBS Pro 90
Jereme Leafe Pro 95

So I am almost done with my npw build.
I am building a 15m and am about to start bridling it.
Supplies-
From http://texloncorp.com/
.75oz Ripstop $5/yard. Min of 10 yards per color ordered. 20 yards = $100
From http://goodwinds.com/
Sewing Thread - $8
Needles - Very cheap $2 a pack?
160lb x 500ft Black Braided Dacron (for seam reinforcement) - $13
Bridle line - 140lb x 300ft Grey Bridle Line ($40) and 80lb x 500ft Braided Spectra Line ($35)
So I spent about $200 for my supplies. This also gives me plenty of supplies to build another kite.

I've bought kite building supplies at Into The Wind, they have really nice windproofed ripstop for about $11.50/ yard, and you can but single yards. 1
yard is about 36"x 48"... Or something like that, maybe bigger.
Here's the linky: http://www.intothewind.com/shop/Repair_and_Kitemaking/Fabric...
I'm going to take a nap now

Goodwinds also sells ripstop. 60" stock $10.99 / yd if you want smaller quantities. Looks like you got a really good deal though considering the
volume you needed, especially since you beat the price by half and didn't have to get too much extra. That will make a nice bag for your sail.

Sooo....
the answer is......depends on size. 4-5m..$60 perhaps...?
Remember It's a running yard with a width of either 48" or 60" so it's more than a sq yd for each yd purchased
1m² = 1550in²...............
36"(1 running YD) x 48"= 1728 sq inches or 1.1148m²
36" x 60"= 2160 sq inches or 1.3935m²
This gives an approximate way to cost for fabric. The bridal and other is additional $. There is a formula for total # of bridal feet based on kite
size.
If you use old /damaged/salvaged donated kites as scrap fabric- like a friend did- you can make for cheap!:smug:

From http://texloncorp.com/
The ripstop is 54” inches wide.
I emailed them to ask and then also measured it when I received the order. It is indeed 54'' as they claim.
I forgot to add that I did order some nylon webbing to use as attachment points for the bridle. I think it was like 10-15 bucks for some sexy blue
webbing.
http://www.amazon.com/Yards-Royal-Heavy-Nylon-Webbing/dp/B00...
Also, don't forget to order some extra ripstop so you can use it for bobbin/needle tension adjustment on your sewing machine.
Note: I spent a couple weeks trying to figure out the best materials and places to get them from. Wish I had this shopping list when I started!!!
Would of made it so much easier.

okay.....
36 x54 in =1944 sq. inches
1944in² = 1.2542m²
The Oriental Trading 20 ft circle of fabric thingy...
..area of circle = pi x10² = 314.159 ft²= 29.186m² !!
:o almost 30 square meters of material! ( although
some wasted on the curve of the edge) for $65. That's just a bit over two bucks a yard! Stuck w/ rainbow colors... but so?
..........good find by riffclown!

I want to build one too, but I am reluctant due to the bridle/line setup. Is there a calculator out there that I can use to work out exactly the right
line lenghts, bridles, etc? Is it possible to use a 4-line depower bar as well? Thanks

Hey Lofty, I just finished my 15m last night. The bridle part was in my opinion the easy part. (took me about 6 hours) The sewing took me like one and
a half months.
There is a calculator. http://freedom2000.free.fr/NPW_NPW9B_plans_eng.html#NPW_prog
If you cannot get it working, let me know what size you want and I can plug it into my calculator and send you a screenshot of the output. I am a
developer by trade, and getting the thing to run on my windows 7 environment was a bit of a hassle. (but doable)
Also, I made an altered bridle to try it out on a 4 line depower bar. I will let ya know how well it works/doesn't work.
The winds out here are unfortunately too strong to test this thing out this weekend. Let you know as soon as I get some flying time in.

Hey Purely luck....... any pics of your Nasa..with some close up of details(stiching, bridal attachment, altered bridal set up)?
Depower is interesting...chicken loop/safety release or none?
How many hours on sewing? What are key time sucking points there?
.....curious
