starting out fresh

Hello all, I went down to the Lake front this fall and saw kiteboarders having a great time, said this looks like fun so I bought a hq hydra 300 and started learning to fly it now after a couple of months I think I am really good at it and my wife picked it up fast also.
I want to do snow kiting so I bought a tensor 3.flew it yesterday it has more pull than the hq but winds were very light.
Will that be enough to pull me on a snowboard or should I look into a bigger kite. I was supposed to get a tensor 5 meter from Amazon but when it came the bag was full of cloth and junk to weigh it down, someone must have bought it and returned hoping amazon would not open which they did not, boy was I bummed almost 300 for a bag of junk. Now looking at a peter lynn twister 4
Or a ozone 5m.
which will give me good pull in low to med wind
I would also like to try land boarding possibly buggy.
I am going to take some lessons and try kite boarding this coming spring.

Amazon should have worked with you to get your money back, they did not? That's a shame.

The tensor 3 would need some pretty strong winds to get you moving around on a snowboard, but it's a GREAT tool to continue learning with!

Could you give us a hint as to where you're located so we could perhaps direct you to a local store who could help you demo some kites before you buy one?

Take lessons and ask your teacher what size, make, and other stuff you want to know. He would know more of what you would need. Better answers from your teacher than what you will get here. Not that the info here is wrong or anything, just that your teacher will be able to understand your needs better than here on the forum.
After you have lessons and know what you want and need, then you can ask us, at which time we will all have an answer.

area I fly

I am in South e wi.close to
Lake Michigan
Amazon said they will give me full refund. Wait till they open the bag and see what is in there .
Im going to sell the hq hydra 300 as I learned all I could with that. Do you think a pl twister 4.1 would work good for snow kiting.
The local dealer here primary sells and works with with kiteboarding kites.
I'm going to Florida in December where are placed that do training ill be in miami area and Cape Canaveral areas.

This statement tells me that you still have much more to learn.

You will need much more than one kite in quiver. This will be a good kite to teach others who want to try and a good kite for those high wind days. I would bet if you got that kite out in 25mph winds it will teach you a thing or two :)

What I am trying to say is do not sell it .. you will need it. Since it is about 3m I would suggest you look for something closer to 5m. This will give you a good wind range coverage in 2 kites.

yea...3m kites rule..but im getting you have the tensor in a 3..if so no real need for the hydra but you definitely haven’t discovered what it's/your capabilities are..that takes like forever..and since it is a closed cell it can offer things that reg foils don’t...wish i had that kite, it could teach me a thing or two...and what Dino is worried about is once you think yov’e got nothing to learn from a kite is the time we have to worry about you...if you haven't been supermaned by that HQ you haven’t come close to learning all you can from it..have fun but always be safe

What city do you live in? There are a few of us located in WI also, including myself in Green Bay. There is always the option to get some of us together this winter, that way you could try some different kites and get a feel for what is out there. I do LOTS of kite skiing in the winter, mostly around this area, but always like to ski a different area for a change of scenery. Thanson2001ok lives in Appleton, Slopecat is in the twin cities and I believe razeontherock lives somewhere in southern Wisconsin. There is also a stong following of kiters in Madison that kite water and snow. They also give kiting lessons and frequent the Sheboygan area often in the summer months. Winnebago Kiters Association is another group that kites around the fox cities, so there's contacts out there, you just have to know where to look. Feel free to PM me if your intersted in meeting up this winter, WI lakes are a blast to ride once they freeze up.

I'm trying to sell my 5.1m PL Core.

http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=27115

It's a great all around kite, it performs well in the buggy, and would probably suite your needs, if you're interested send me an email or U2U... The last guy to express an interest isn't responding to my emails.

I'm going to take a nap now

Snowkiting the Twin Cities

There are a lot of folks kiting in the Twin Cities summer and winter. There just doesn't seem to be many of them here. There is a very active local forum (LAKAWA) and some activity on Facebook I guess.

I am looking forward to seeing the lakes freeze up and getting some snow. I am ready to go.

Last winter was the first one I tried to kite with a snowboard and it went OK. I think I got in about six sessions. I was hoping the experience would help me in the water during the summer months. I had never been able to go more than about 30 feet in the water except for one of my paid lessons. I think I mostly gave up on the idea when summer came around. I didn't go out until late August. The very first time out this year I got in the water, put the board on, dove the kite and rode for almost two minutes. My best ride yet. It just got better from there. I am really excited about being on the water now. I only got out two more times before I gave up with the cold water in late October. The time spent with the snowboard last winter was a huge help.

I started out kiting three winters ago. At the time I had never seen a kite in the air and I hadn't ever skied or tried a snowboard. I began with a paid lesson static flying a Slingshot B3. It went well. Later in the day I tried skiing with a B4 and felt overpowered and was dragged around a bit. Kind of scary. I got a chance to try very late in the day with the B3 and felt much more confortable with it for the conditions that day. I don't recall how much wind there was. I ended up buying a B3 and tried to pick up what I could the rest of that winter. Most of the time I was quite underpowered. In hindsight I wish I had a 4m but I can still use the 3m here and there.

By far the majority of my riding last year was on a 10m Frenzy. I love that kite. I wish I had one in a 6m or 7m size to go with it.
