NABX QUESTION.......

Well my lovely boss wont let me take a week off work for NABX,,,, sucks to be me !!!

But I can get the time off to go to the pre-event at El Mirage (witch I attended the FALL THANG)

Can you just show up to the pre- event and just ride with fellow friends or is it for registered NABX participants only ??

I have been craving some playa since the last time and nothing seems to meet the standards here at home..

My understanding is the $50.00 fee goes to pay for permits, port-o-pottys and the tent out at nabx. Anything goes out at Elmers so just show up and have fun while you can.

Susan has it right.
The Pre-event is just that.

For some of us, a week at nabx simply isn't enough.
So we get a head start on things by hanging out at elmer's and hitting some of the other dry lakes that dot the Mojave.

One of the principle attractions of wind-powered sports, it seems to me, is that we don't play when the whistle blows, we play when the wind blows.

There are already plenty of bosses and obligations and expectations in our lives.
Playing with a power source that is not under our control, I think, provides a sense of balance to the man-made, constructed world we live and work in the rest of the time.

So there is no registration for the Pre-event.
No fees are charged.

There are some minor things newbies must contend with concerning underwear and liquor, but that's best told another time.
Like around the evening fire... And as a surprise.

I'm just making this stuff up.

Y'ALL,

Health must include more than the physical aspects.

A broken arm is obvious and apparent.
A broken soul (or even one in jeopardy) is harder to recognize.

This "thing" we do... This place we put ourselves...
Nourishes the intangibles.

I use it like therapy.
Kite flying is much cheaper than a traditional psychiatrist listening to stories about my Mom, and much quicker too.

Comfort and nourishment for my spirit.

But what do I know?

Couple of questions about the pre event. NABX last year was my first had a great time and want to spend more time. I travel with a 5th wheel I had no problems getting it to buggy town but I was wondering about the enterance to some of the other lakes. The transistion from paved to dirt is the key thing slope being problem so you don't drag the back end and rip stuff up. I also assume that El Mirage is open all of the time so you can show up ant day with out any BLM permits.

Sounds like it is more a gathering of sprits in the wind than an event.

Elmers should not be a problem. They put in a new paved road that takes you to the entrance to the lake bed. If you plan on going to Superior too you have to drive down a gravel road 20 miles to get to the lake bed. Hope this helps.

Hey G,
You're right to think of things like access now, instead of finding out sad truths later.
Elmer's will be no problem.
Wasn't in the past, but now with the paved road extending all the way to the lakebed access, it's a piece of cake.
They bring in lots of RV's and 5th Wheels - Even semi rigs for motion-picture shoots, etc...
Superior is 20+ miles down a gravel/dirt road.
Can be bumpy in places if they haven't graded lately, but we just take it slow.
Big rigs can make it without difficulty.
Silurian is right beside the road on the way between Baker and Dumont Dunes.
No access problems there either.

On to another thought...

Many posts wondering about inclusion.
Will I be welcomed?
Must I register and pay to come play with y'all?

Just to set the record straight.
(And this is just my opinion - Not any sort of Official anything)

We buggy riders and wind junkies have always felt a bit off from the mainstream.
We seem to revel in that, and in the traction game we play.
We gather together to share the experience.

Paying for the stuff that makes that more enjoyable is seperate.
Organizing seems to be a necessary evil.

We try to keep the two distinct.

Bottom line is we like to fly kites with our friends - Period.

All who like to share that are welcome.
ALL.

The unspoken truth is some come to the organized events and don't pay.
If they find something there - some value - they'll come back.
They'll see the value for the money and it stops being an issue.

An example...
The landsailers who use the lakebed the week before nabx are organized differently.
Some 300-350 people attend, but only 30-40 (the racers) pay the registration.
At nabx, some 300-350 people attend, only 7-15 race, and over 130 pay full-registration.
If we all share the burden, it becomes very light.

Kiters seem to get that from the start.

Maybe we've been out in the sun too long.

Whatever... It seems to be working.

It is what YOU make it.

There are so few real reasons not to attend an event like nabx.
Overwhelming reasons why events like this are special beyond words.

So I'll stop mine here.

Hey Pablo go to the nabx site and they have a registration form that you fill out. If you register early it is only $50.00 charge which covers permits, insurance, port-o-pottys, tent, event t-shirt, dumpster and banquet. So your money pays for a lot of stuff. There is a volunteer staff that works real hard all year to make this event happen.

k, I'll get there in a couple days, wallet's got to recover from christmas first. But I'll be registering for sure, looks like a real value, I was wondering about permits and insurance as well so I'm glad it's all covered in one spot.

Also looks like I'll be able to make it for the whole trip this time. So yeah really looking forwards to it.

Don,
Yep, the shot-cars at last year's nabx were quite the hit.
I hear many ended up on display on shelves at home and so the story gets told many times.

Jose and I didn't discuss making up extras to give away beforehand.
It just happened that way.

But this year I'm ready.
Already have another 16 built and 14 more shot glasses await their rolling hardware.

Don't Forget The Stuff That Goes Inside!
(They don't seem nearly as much fun if left empty)

I also expect others to have heard the siren's-call and quite a selection of shot-cars will no doubt debut this spring.

For First-timers, shot-cars are merely a silly drinking game we play.
Take a Matchbox or Hot Wheels car and glue a shot glass to the top.
Bring it with you to nabx.

Rather than feel like a stranger in a strange land, you'll immediately fall into the group like an old friend.
Someone with enough presense of mind to understand the concept and how to play.

Or not.
I'll have loaners available for the event.

Glen-Baby,

Whilst we never roll the shot-cars about when filled, the contents take on a greater importance.
Personally I prefer to sip Bushmills Irish Whiskey.
If you're buying... The Green label is a single-malt Irish - And quite good.

But I do come prepared so be sure to bring a "tank" of YOUR favorite too.

Like the buggies, you may leave the bottles with me on the playa at night, and they will be well watched over.

OH RIGHT!?!?! And well consumed I am sure. Although I would also be found guilty. :D There's nothing like paying homage at the graveyard of dead soldiers before leaving.

I will have my oldies, but sentimental goodies as well as my new pieces that need to be christened. I will also be bringing some gifts for new folks joining us in Buggytown.

As I always say:

Howdy,
Re-reading some of the posts... I find I might have ignored the basic question in my philosophical, emotional ramblings.

NABX and the Pre-Event are two seperate events.
NABX has a registration.
Pre-Event does not.

NABX is a BLM permitted event.
Pre-Event is not.

Buggytown exists where-ever two or more buggy riders gather.

OK?
