Dyneema separation from handles

Hi All,

I recently travelled to the US for work from New Zealand. Before I let I spent a lot of time researching the kite I wanted by reading forums and taking feedback from people who currently own HQ kites.

I brought a 2.2m HQ Symphony kite and now that I am back in New Zealand last weekend was able to find good conditions to fly the kite for the first time.

After launch I had approx 2 minutes flight time and then where the dyneema line is tied to the looped handles one of them separated at the join and the kite came crashing down to earth.

The intention was to use this kite as a trainer before upgrading to one which can be used with a buggy.

I'm really disappointed that this has happened considering the wind strength was low and the kite is brand new.

Ive emailed the store and HQ directly and will see what i get back from them. In lieu of that does anyone have any guidance around tying the dyneema line back to the handle ?

Take some pics & post them so we can see what it all looks like. If it's not in too bad shape maybe someone here can direct you.

I'm going to take a nap now

If you have problems posting pics, feel free to email them directly to me at:

Chris Shultz of HQ kites frequents this forum. His userid is Chris.

You might want to send him a U2U (private message) for which he will most likely receive an email notification.

He hasn't been on since last week, so he might be travelling, but still worth a try.

How much longer will you be in the US? Where are you currently located?

ATB,
Sam

I agree that contacting chris (LINK to chris) would be the best place to start. He's usually very responsive to this type of issue.

Basing everything on my experience with those lines and first flight issues.

If the string broke at the sleeving knot this video will give you some insight on repairing it quickly yourself while communicating with Chris.

The video is from Rev but does a good job in showing how to work the sleeving aspect. IF the sleeving is no longer attached to the main line ,you'll need a sleeving tool and a guitar string folded to a crease makes a perfect tool.
I've had a few strings break that came with the Symphony series and the line does tend to break at that point. Once you resleeve and equalize, I doubt you'll have the issue again.

Here's a link to Prism's sleeving tutorial but you should be able to reuse the sleeve you have and as stated before a guitar string will get you there for the tool.

HQ Symphony 2.2.4!
Skydog SDT 2.8
HQ Crossfire II 2.0, 3.0 & 4.0
HQ Toxic 8.0
Flexifoil Blurr 3.5
Flexifoil Blade 8.5
PL Hornet 2.0

That's exactly the spot I was thinking it was. The two videos will get you through the issue. The hardest part is untying the knots so you can reuse the sleeving. The part I've circled is a larkshead knot onto the handle and will have to be untied so you can reuse the sleeving. The handle itself is fine. It's a little tedious to fix but straightforward with guidance.

I mentioned the issue here last year. LINK

Still, the Symphony 2.2 is a great kite and still on my very short list of favorites.

Yeah especially seeing as it's happened to riffclown also.
Thought it would be something that should have been corrected.

Chris from HQ suggested to get in touch with the global body of HQ to see if there is a NZ distributor which can help. Loosing hope of anything from that path.

riffclown has posted some helpful videos to re sleeve the lines which look like ill have to do myself.

I'm in Auckland.
