Help setting up my Depower Kite

So yesterday, I bought an Ozone Frenzy 5m depower, and with the wind setting in this afternoon at around 12-16mph, I thought it would be the perfect time to try it out. Being a depower newbie, after unpacking, I'm a bit unsure of how to connect everything to my harness. I've watched a few youtube videos, but am still unclear. Can anyone provide some hints for me? Below are the pictures of the bar and chicken loop (and a lot of other loops). Any assistance would certainly be appreciated!

it has a back line shut down, thats the long black bungee with velcro cuff , hook that to a side ring on harness, it kinda the safety.

the harness looks like the spreader bar is upside down, hard to tell.

the pull through loop is the pic above a harness . loop around and back thru and you can attach stuff to it

the plastic tube with loops and pull on the ends is a D loop , you can use in INSTEAD of a chicken loop . it attaches to bar, the bar has to be set up WITHOUT CL or at least depowered. avoid it ...since the CL is present !

the red loop above depowerline looks to be a velcro keeper for dangling depower strap...nice to have but in the way mostly.

the red ball is the depower trimmer pull and it gets pinched in the clamcleat it sits in when pulled thru to trim in other wise its ALL OUT at the ball stop.

this set can be switched to NON DEPOWER , and no harness , where the cuff (on the long black bungee)goes would go on the wrist, and all the depower line stuff is attached to the bars center, and hence could use the D loop with harness.

confusing but kit has some of both

I agree the spreader bar on your harness looks to be upside down.

Looking at the top picture, the red line between your brake lines looks like it is running over top of your center lines. It is better to have it run below the center lines.

That is your safety leash running from the brake lines. You can attach that cuff to your wrist but I would attach it to my spreader bar. Above the cuff is your final release. Pull that if you have pulled the primary safety and must completely detach from the kite.

The red ball and cleat are your trim system. It is wide open right now. I suggest you set it almost the opposite to get started. Then open it up if needed.

The red loop above the bar is your primary safety release. Pull it and your kite should back down on the brake lines. TEST IT

The red loop on the chicken loop below the bar is your second release. Pull it if the primary release is pulled and you are still in trouble.

The round thing is your chicken loop and chicken finger. it goes on your spreader bar and is secured by poking the finger through the spreader loop and under the CL.

Take a close look at how you safeties look before testing them so your have an idea how to put them back together. TEST THEM !!!!

The white thing is an old skool D-loop it static loop. You don't need it but it would go on your bar . If you have a bar for your FB kites I would use it there. The black thing on the bar belongs with the D-loop and is part of the safety for it.

I think the black thing could be looped through the ring on your safety leash cuff if you want to hook to a ring on your harness rather than on to the spreader bar ???

DON'T think depower, think front lines / back lines.

Flying off your spreader / Bar out and trim strap in is like using the front lines on your kite. Pulling in the bar / opening the strap adds brake input.

Speed = Power . Try to speed the kite through the window with bar out / front lines. Add a bit of brake as you approach the edge to slow the kite + turn the kite. Even in 15mph wind you will be underpowered on the 5m . At 10 you will really need to keep it moving. Don't expect it to produce much power in those winds.

Avoid jerking the bar forward and back . That is like taking you handle and jerking them around.

Note: center lines go to the front bar to back.

Thanks for the feedback guys! The harness is actually upside down - not the spreader bar. Bad picture. Ok, so I have two questions. How can I attach the safety leash with the cuff to my harness. Second, how do I adjust the cleat? I'm gone right now so ill have to look at it when I get home.

Ha Ha,

The harness is upside down

Just wrap the cuff around the bar part of the spreader like you would your wrist if there is room.

The cleat has ridges that should hold the rope if you push it in. Release the rope if you pull it away. If you left It wide open I expect you struggled in that low of wind.

Search 2005 Frenzy manual on Google .

This thing predates 2005 judging by the bar.

Well, I took it out this afternoon and the 15mph winds were definitely enough to get in in the air and keep it there with very little effort. Maybe it was because the wind wasn't stronger, but I struggled to see much (if any) difference by adjusting the length of the trimmer pull. Also the kite felt sluggish when trying to turn it - I would guess that's because I've been used to handles. When the kite reached the edge of the window, I felt like I had to pull the handle nearly perpendicular just to get it to turn back across the window. Not a lot of power felt when pulling in the bar - but some. Not bad for my first fly, but a very different feel indeed. As some suggested, I think I'm going to need a bigger kite as I don't really get out in winds greater than 15-20mph. I'm thinking an 8m would be better...
