Bar eventually, keeps one hand free to handle the board, also makes it easy to lean back and see where you're going. But you will lose a little control over the kite with the bar compared to the handles, so handles may be easier to start off.

I think it depends on the kite and conditions. Anytime the kite really needs to be worked (bad winds or low winds) I find handles to be your best option. Some kites prefer to be flown on the brakes or with some brake on so handles work best for them though they can be flown on a bar.

A bar is more comfortable in combination with a harness then handles, IMO.

In the end, a lot of it will come down to preference and what you want to gain or give up - there are trade-offs to both.

If you are going to a bar I recomend you modify it. I started out with my bullet on a standard 4 line bar and the performance was poor compaired to handles. Pablo has set me up with a 2 / 1 pulley system on the brakes and it makes ALL the difference. All it takes is 3 pulleys and some line.

Yup, 9m Buster was a total pig on the bar as well, swapped it over to a 50mm pulley bar setup and it'll turn on a dime now, seems more solid in low winds as well. We've had everyone at the local spot try the setup and it's agreed, it's by far the best bar setup any of us have ever flown.

Still need pics to post up.

I've been getting bars off E-bay then doing some light mods. Last one I picked up new was $35 to my door. Needs a $5 pulley and a safety strap and it'll be good to go.

i prefer bars these days...
give you bit more freedom - also you can't fly depowerables on handles (well... not really!) and that's what it's all about!!

Bar -> Handles

Hmmm... I've always used handles for my foils as I have better control over the kite that way. But this weekend I did a bad thing... I had a 9m LEI in the air, and jumped on the mountainboard... and went for a couple mile ride in both directions up the beach.

Handles give more finesse for the kite, but the bar makes it so easy...

Now what I need to research is how to convert the bridles of an 8m I made into a depowerable foil.... and use it on a bar.

Psssst, cross over bar setup, all the benefits of turn speed you get from handles with the convenience of a bar. None of the low end loss you get with depowerables either. I've done it to my 9m Buster I and it'll turn on a wingtip.
