Converting the Vmax into a landyacht...

I recently saw on MG's site their new MG Vertical landyacht - very nice! Would love one, but sadly can't afford one. Got me thinking if I could add a mast and sail to the Vmax. This is what happened.....

Parts 1 & 2 is the construction and part 3 is the actual test sail on 13th Beach. Was a fun and worthwhile project and no Vmax's were harmed during the process.

Oldfart bought a flexifoil buggy with a conversion kit on it from somebody on here.

He had never ridden a land sailor before but took right off down the beach, WAY down the beach. He was up on 2 wheels and counting the seconds he could stay that way on the return trip up the beach. He was very pleased with himself and the whole set up!

Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.
Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.

I think I am talking about Scott's Zooter that Oldfart bought.

Too bad you didn't hang out longer at SOBB. He showed up and I am sure used it.

Wow! Just great. Nice project. I would have liked to have heard the 'A Team' theme tune as you rolled it out of your garage though. :D

LOL - the A Team's theme tune! Haven't heard that in yonks.

Haven't tipped it over yet but it is certainly disconcerting when it lifts a wheel. But after a very pleasant 2nd afternoon on 13th Beach, I'm starting to get a little familiar with the different forces involved. It was blowing 14-15 knots on top of the dune, but on the beach only 8 -12 - one disadvantage of the sail I guess. You also can't wave the sail around to generate power so takeoff can be a fairly slow process!! All in all, she's a ripsnorter!! (Aussie slang for very good - I think?)

Iain named it for me. 'The BlowMax'

The blowmax might be taken the wrong way out of context. Only kidding, I do like the name.

Do you need the same sail size as a kite for the same wind?

Makes his own music too! Love watching your videos. Like the ridge soaring in the background too. This must be the only land yacht on Kenda BR's. You must be proud to have converted the buggy and to have it work so well first time.

I think so. I needed a little more wind for the 4.1m sail than I had yesterday. Normally I'd be flying the 5.5m Nasa which would have had more power. The 3m sail would need 14knots and up....so yeah, roughly equivalent to a fixed bridal.

I am extremely pleased with the way it's turned out. And certainly owe a bit of it to Chook who patiently answered my questions about sails, downhaul, outhaul, sheeting and all the yachting stuff I know didly about.

Nice work. I tried my smallest windsurfing sail on top of my buggy, but it looked too BIG 5m2

I think you would put some rods from the rear axle to the mast. Better safe than sorry.....
