New to the site. I have been power kiting for about 3 years on the beaches of Southern Spain. I started of with a flexi foil 1.7m with handles.
I have just bought a Peter Lynn 3.0m with a bar, scrub land board, helmet and safety pads. The sand on my local beach is to soft for the land board but good for kite practice. I have been flying the Peter Lynn for 2 weeks in various wind speeds 6 up to 15 mph. Went out yesterday and was getting 35 mph gusts so walked away. Should have taken the flexi with me, would have been fun.
The question I would like to ask is. The Peter Lynn flies great was easy to control in 6 mph but didn't seem to give much pull.
In 15mph upwards was quite difficult and I kept stalling it outside the wind window. Although the wind was a little bit unpredictable. I have found somewhere to take the board. What would be the best wind speed to start?

Which Peter Lynn kite did you start with? Hornet, Impulse? something else?

it all depends on your kite on what you will get. On a beach like you have, it will be much easier than on grass or some other similar surface. But a 3m is nicely suited for a beginner on a board over 10 mph to wherever you are comfortable. Usually under 20 mph. you will find that this is a multi kite sport. You will want the smaller kites for the windy days and larger kites for the not so windy days.

Part of your problem might be the bar. You might try using handles instead so you have control over your brakes and prevent it from getting to the edge of the window

A plan on a few more weeks kite practice before jumping on the board. As I get more skilled I will feel more confident. A mate of mine has a Peter Lynn with handles so when we go out we have a range to start.

Since you don't have active brake input your best bet is to turn the kite before it gets to the edge of the window and over flies. A gust of wind will shoot the kite farther into the window. If you feel a gust coming turn the kite a bit. Don't stand around with the kite overhead in those winds. If you keep it off to one side you won't get lofted but may get sent down wind. Your friend with the 4 line kite can avoid over fly by adding some brake input and slowing the kite before it hits the edge,

As you have noticed, how much wind you need to get moving depends a lot on the surface you are riding on. The impulse isn't designed with a lot of lift / pull so you will find you need a bit more wind than the guy with the 4 line . Only you can decide how much wind is too much. That top limit will increase as you get more control of the kite. Packing up is always a reasonable option.

Never leave any of your kites at home. Your chance of needing the one you left behind is huge.

Hey there I've just recently started boarding too! I also started out with a 3m Peter Lynn, but mine is a Twister which I think has more lift than the Impulse.

I found that 10-15mph was about the best for me to get started with (on grass). At 10mph it was quite hard to get rolling but once I was moving it was easy enough to work the kite up and down to keep moving. At 15mph I had a couple of nice park n ride runs with my 3m when the surface was hard. Any more than 15mph and it started to feel a bit much for me, and I got pulled off the front of the board a few times.

I only took a few sessions on my Twister with the board before I wanted to get a depower kite. And now I have and haven't looked back! Good luck!!

I'd agree with what most have said, 10-15mph is definitely the sweet spot wind wise. Even though my quiver has enough range for outside it, that's still my favorite range, especially for teaching someone new, and gusts with that are much more manageable.

Well a few months down the line into my land boarding experience. Spent a month on the beach getting used to the kite and then a few weeks standing on the board with the kite. The beach is to soft to get moving but it was good to get used to the feel of kite and board together. In strong wind I did manage to get moving.
Ready for the hard pack sand, not to be the Spanish council have ploughed it up to stop camper vans from parking. No tide on med so no hard sand on beach. A few small areas and car parks near by so purchased a NASA star 3 4m from Germany allowing me to fly on short lines in small areas. Good kite got me moving. Possibly looking into a couple more.

Congratulations on getting moving! Now that you're moving on a harder surface, the Impulse might work for you too.
Don't rule out large grassy areas like soccer fields (football pitch, if you prefer) and parks.
Kites are like bunnies - you start out with one, then two, then you have a whole bunch of them:-)
Above all else, be safe; if the little voice in the back of your head starts to worry, pack-up to ride another day. And always wear a helmet.

The nasa stars are great for cruising. I fly mine on 5 meter lines in parking lots and remote roads (board and buggy). Short lines on landboard is nice because you can throw the kite high and behind you to use as a break if needed without fear of lofting (unless grossly overpowered). Good luck. Wish I had wind today so I could be flying instead of typing.
