Hello, I am new to this sport and live in Salt Lake City. I've been online looking for info on local places to sail and have found almost no firsthand info. Hard to believe in a state loaded with dry lake beds and desert. Also hard to believe there aren't a bunch of local sailors. So where are you? And where are you sailing? I look forward to hunting out good places on my own later, but for now it would be nice to know where others have sailed, especially good places for a beginner. Also, if there are local groups I ought to know about I'd appreciate that info, too.

We found a spot out west on I-80 that is pretty large and very easy to get to. It is out on exit 77 towards Dugway. We sailed there a couple times last year but the winds didn't cooperate the times we were out. It was also a bit damp which made it a little difficult but hopefully this spring it will dry out and we can get some good sailing out there.

Lets hook up and head out when the weather gets a bit warmer. We have a very small group and would love to make it larger.

Check our Knolls bombing range and recreation area out towards Wendover. We used to dirt bike out there when I grew up and the flats go for miles.

I always fly kites at the sugar house park or the flying field( which located in Taylorsville recreation center). There is a bunch of grass land for sailing kites. However, I haven't found any organization that I can fly with.

@ChinaKiteFlyer, dman, makalu1, and of course Kent - Great to meet you guys on PKF! I live up in Park City and do quite a bit of buggying on our various recreation fields. It remains a bit of a tight wire act and I'm waiting for the shoe to drop someday, but so far so good. I use a BigFoot with its balloon tire. I was out on the fields behind the Ecker Middle School a couple of weeks back and actually had a groundskeeper comment on how he liked that my big tires didn't chew up their grass! Got to love it. I was really fearing the conversation was going to go another way.

I would LOVE to get together with other flyers and throw some kites up together! I'm with Kent, the Knolls bombing range sounds intriguing. Kent and I have discussed the Dugway site before but to date I haven't committed to the drive. My time windows for flying tend to be very short and I can't usually burn clock driving too far. I would, however, gladly do that to meet up with folks.

Are any of you guys also snow kiters? I haven't done it yet, but I plan to get in a lot of kiting on skis this winter. There have been a few folks that have done this up in Park City in recent winters but I wasn't doing power kiting then so I haven't met any of them so far.

Windstruck, I am planning on heading out to try sailing on the 26th if weather and schedules hold out. Hopefully going to be giving sailing lessons and do some buggying. Planning on dugway first and if the wind is light, heading to Knolls. I hear Strawberry resivoir is a great place for snowkiting and should be a pretty easy drive for you. We'll have to try and hook up once the white stuff hits the ground.
