Pre-Event alternatives?

I have made plans with a couple others to do the Pre-Event at Pismo Sat, Sun, Mon and maybe Tues... There was interest expressed by others in another area on this forum, so I am just throwing it out there to see if anyone else might want to catch some beach wind with us...

I have a couple of concerns, tho:
I have a 2WD minivan and will be towing a small-ish trailer. My only beach driving experience is on Galveston's East Beach, where it is nearly as easy to drive on as pavement. How does Pismo compare? Will 2WD be a problem? I REALLY dont like getting stuck in sand and/or mud... (does anyone?) We are planning on camping on the beach. If anyone else is interested, and has a 4x4 with a 2" receiver, maybe they could tow my trailer to a suitable camping spot, (for beers, of course ;) so I could leave my puny 2WD mommyvan at the parking lot... <grin>

My other concern are tides. Specifically, can anyone point me toward a tide chart (hopefully with instructions on how to read one) for that weekend at Pismo? I LOVE where the water meets the land, but I am not experienced with tides and am not afraid to admit it...
Thanks for reading!!

I'll be there for friday, saturday and possibly sunday. I have reservations at the state park for friday and saturday nights.

I do have an all wheel drive suv and should be able to tow your trailer for said compensation.. :spin:;)

Looks like there should be a LOT of beach in the afternoons.

See ya there

Hey Seany.I have been on Pismo five times and beach condition is changing all the time. However in most of the Year You won't have problems with driving there if tides are below 3ft(that aplay to 2WD).As for a towing I would not recomend to do it without 4x4.Every time I go there I drive to camp at low tide to avoid disaster and park front car to the Ocean to have good start in the morning.Still it's good to make Yout self a starting by digging out lose sand from under Your tires. One time I had stuck on this beach big time.I was loaded with the gear and tide was 4 and rising. We decide to go for it.As sand was not to hard 10 ft from the wather I was driving my 2WD pickup next to the eage. After 1 mile we hit soft pool and I had framd touching the sand.As for a worst tide was rising and we didn't have no one to help.I stopped ranger but He didn't give a ..... about it.So I ask him about towing company and He gived my a local nr.Service is $150 and i just needed to move 10 ft form this pool.So waiting for towing We started to dig and build retaining wall. After 30 min of digging I did stoped one guy with 4x4 jeep and He was my dream come true.Ofcourse all this time wind was 15mph and when We get ready to fly it die for a rest of this weekend.Important lesson from that is that You should get 4X4 to drive on the beach or have shovel and a good rope.Make sure to loose tire presure as this helping to ride on sand. When You get on this beach with 2WD drive 20mph that will also put You on a safe site, but in the same time watch for a cap SPEED LIMIT is 15MPH and they will give You a ticket.Parking next to the entrance is closed during the night and cosest one is long way from gate.I'll try to make it so I can help You with towing.
Cheers

Zloty,
That is my nightmare! I have seen video of people in Mexico on a beach with 4x4s getting too close to water with tide coming in. Engine quits and big 4x4 SUV gets tossed around like a toy in a kids bath. Not something I want to do on my vacation! Thanks for the warnings!

Jim, I will look for you early saturday morning. If you leave before we do, I am pretty sure we will be able to find someone else with a receiver to haul my trailer back...

Many thanks to you both!!

Ooohh... that brings up another question: Do we need reservations, or do we just pay when we get there?

This will be my first time out so I'm not sure about the reservation necessity. I just didn't to take any chances.

You don't need reservation.Just pay entrance fee on the gate I think it's like $10 a night.Make sure to stop by in one of ATV rental place just before gate and check for photo gallery with tide-mare.All kind of things even RV in ocean due close overnight camping to the water.By the way be prepared for ATV,at night it's a pain in a$$ sometimes they ride all night long.

Thanks zloty. I was looking for reservation info and you answered my question :)

I will be joining you guys at the Pismo beach. Sean is kind enough to offer me a ride from LA airport (I am coming from DE) to Pismo beach and NABX later. Thank you, Sean!

See you guys soon at the Pismo beach. - Brian

Probably more important than 4x4 is M&S rated tires, down to 5-10psi (almost nothing).

Like zloty said, get there at low tide, and plan to leave at low tide. I've seen guys out there in a Toyota Prius. Just don't push yours or your car's limits.

Bring a shovel, a couple 2x6's 3' long. Also, like having your own jumper cables, you are more likely to get help out of the hole you dug if you have a tow strap and a hitch pin.

Two more question about Pismo beach.

1. Do they allow alcohole beverage on the beach?

Sean and I are thinking about kiteboarding during high tide and wind is not right for buggying.

2. Do they have shower facility?
3. How good Pismo beach is for beginner kiteboarders?

Sweet! Thanks! As per corey's post in the lanboard competition, I was wondering where everyone was gonna scatter. Anyone planning on being out at Jean at all pre-pre event. Was gonna go to Ivanpah but I dont want cramp the landsailors style, though I'd probably fit right in with the kitewing.

Tide info for Pismo...

Take a look at JTIDES, a free java based tide prediction program the gives you some good visual based tide patterns.. The program is at:
http://www.arachnoid.com/JTides/index.html
As far as I know the nearest tide station is at Morro Bay, about 25 miles north of Pismo, and should be close enough..

I'm not sure yet if I'll make it to Pismo the weekend before. I'm bringing my Dad along to NABX and see if I can't get him hooked on landsailing. Depending on his schedule, we'll either go to Pismo, or Superior, or just head straight to Vegas. We'll be in Primm Monday night.

If we decide to head for Pismo, I'll give you a call Slawek.

Well, after starting this thread I am going to back out. I have decided to spend as much time with the family on the lakebeds as possible. Just wanted to let people know not to look for us at Pismo. Maybe I will make it another day to Pismo, but not this time. Cheers to all for the advice and offers to tow my trailer, tho. Next time, I will rent a 4x4 to tow it....
