I am impressed with the Uniq Quad. It has a lot of pull, especially for a kite this size. Our winds were so very crazy light, then gusts., then
some steady winds for a little while. Its quicker than I thought it would be. Crashing is now a no worries thing unless you are flying in a cactus
field. The wind window is smaller than a conventional foil. But recovering from oversteer collapsing the kite is an instant reflate and you are on
your way. Though I had a buggy with me, the city was mowing the fields keeping us from bringing it out. Combined with sprinkles, we decided this
would give us an excuse to bring it out again.
I'm super curious how low the wind speed can get to get useable power out of the 4.5m... Plus I'm curious about the lift... really wanting to avoid
lifty-ness ... no more broken bones for me :D.
I may be in the market for a light wind engine come fall and I'm wondering if I'd do better with the 4.5m Uniq Quad, or a 10m NS3...
we'll see.
Must resist.. must resist :o. When flying it, what foil would be equivalent to it's power would you say? Just want to get an idea to the pull these
things generate. Thanks for the review
I'm going to have to fly it a few more times with another kite @ IFLYKITES
It spanks a Hornet in power of course.
Its pull doesn't seem to be that of a Twister/Voltage...but it starts at a much lower wind speed and is slower to build (because the kite is slower)
As for lift, I didn't notice any loftiness, but I think it would be a good buggy engine in the right winds. I cant say on how good upwind it may or
may not be. It is so different from everything else.
I don't notice this kite just sitting quiet at the edge of the window either? It flies well but does it sit still and take care of itself? I am
suspecting the lack of bottom skin may make it sketchy at the edge?
the window is smaller, the edge is closer in. We weren't really testing edge limits, though the Play went way up to the top once when we couldn't
get the hype up that high. I would say for now, pilot was the issue not necessarily going for the edge. I will make it a point to test the edge
this week. I have time after Wednesday to do things like this.
The 4.5 has bridle issues. Peter Lynn is sending out replacement bridle lines for these kites. Just two lines, that were the wrong type/strength.
Several customers had them fail. The first replacement has been successful.
Mike - Wow, so it was a system wide thing. I suspected as much from the letter I showed you. The good news is that swapping out bridle line 497 is
straightforward and will teach someone bridle mechanics a bit if they are new to that aspect of kiting (as I was). I've got the suped up 4.5 back in
my car along with my other go to kites and hope to get it up in the air soon for a proper test drive.
For those other than Mike reading this thread (he and I have been back and forth directly on this) - I bought a 4.5M Uniq from Mike when they first
were available for pre-order. I got it up in the air for it's first flight and in 5-8 knot winds broke a bridle line after about 2-3 turns. Doh!
Mike was great (as always) in working with me on this and communicated directly with PL on my behalf. A couple of days ago PL sent me a letter with a
little ziplock baggy with two stouter bridle lines to swap out the broken one and its mate on the other side of the kite. The bridle line in question
is their #497 which is the main line in the system that connects the 11 leading edge lines into two respective lines that in turn go into the main tie
in where all the power lines come together.
There are a total of 11 lines that come off the leading edge on a 4.5M Uniq. The center tie in point on the leading edge has a bridle line going both
left and right, connecting into the left or right 497 along with its five left or right other leading edge bridle lines. Stock the 497 bridle line
was of the same white bridle line as the rest of the bridle system, but with the replacement 497's (and presumably stock 497s moving forward) were of
sort of the next size up orange bridle line, much stouter than the lines they replaced.
Long story short, I've yet to give the Uniq a proper maiden voyage but hope to in the near future. I tied the broken bridle line together and tried
it for a few minutes more that first day. My early impression is that it will have plenty of grunt but not a very large wind window. May make a nice
training kite for static flying but maybe fall a little short as an ideal buggy engine. I'll get it up in the air again soon (conditions and time
permitting) and post some sort of personal impression review on this thread once complete.
Mike was great to work with through this whole process.
I just filmed another video of the Uniq Quad and the Uniq Play. will be posting later today. More details on flying characteristics and such that
weren't available in the original look.
Took the Uniq 4.5 out for a static flying session this afternoon with the new-and-improved stronger bridle lines. Winds were variable and gusty (why
should today be any different.) ranging between 6-12 knots. The Uniq worked completely as advertised. Not a peep or a whimper with the new lines.
Happy boy! :D
In a seperate thread I'm going to start I did a head to head side by side with the B-K NS3 4.0.
