Why is there a line connecting the two flying handles ? That is it, nice and simple. Thanks

That is to get hooked in to harness or block on harness if You have one

You can cut the line and tie a knot close to each handle to prevent fraying and then you can attach a line back @ needed. (called a strop) You dont have to, just me personally, If Im not in the harness, I dont care for a strop.

I agree with Scoopy, most of the time the factory link line between the handles is to short anyways....especially when you sit down in the buggy. It puts the handles in your lap where it is hard to control. I usually cut the link line (or un-do it if possible) and then attach a longer link line that will actually work. But if I am not at the lake bed doing long hard runs I usually dont even bother with a harness and link line. Too much hassle for short fun runs.

Most manufacturers make the strop short so it works out the right lenght when used with a QR and Pulley block, Also, if you take the time, most handles can have the strop lenght adjusted with a little doing.

If you're flying on the strop without a pulley block it'll seem short. If this is the case then cutting it and extending it is a good option. Be sure to track down some wear resistant rope for the strop, something from a climbing shop is usually the way to go, The cheapo stuff from the local hardware store almost always wears out quickly if not used with a pulley.

Totally agree Pablo, with your bar and release system and pulley they are usually pretty close for most people.
I also find that the strop helps keep it together sometimes on those long two wheel runs.
