hey all, iam 16 (14st) and thinking of getting a powerkite i wanna get into kitebording i know a bit about kites, but i dont know what to get for a kite, ive looked at the HQ beamer II 3.6m, as its apparently a good starter kite and it cheap (£89) also any ideas on a first ATB?

The Beamer is a great kite and will work well for a first kite with the ATB. You will eventually want to work into one of the depowerable kites such as the Frenzy or Montana later down the road but the Beamer will work fine for now.

btw whats the diffrenc between depowerable/traction/power kites??

"conventional" fixed bridle folls and depower foils are both kinds of power/ traction kites.

With fixed bridle foils, the bridles are just that- fixed in place and in lenght. The brake lines on the back of the kite effectively change the angle of attack (AoA) of th kite by deflecting the rear portion of the kite trailing edge like an airplane wing flap.

The depower kites use more sophisticated bridle with pullys that let the pilot change the angle of attack of the whole foil -not just the trailing edge. Pulling the control bar in or out pivots the whole wing, letting you turn up the AoA (more lift and drag) or depower by decreasing the AoA. There is a schematic of a de-power rig here...

Chris... there is nothing wrong with the HQ Beamer II or Beamer TSR series. All kites tend to have their downfalls, ecspecially when wind dies. I don't see this as the kites fault, nor the manufacturer, but moreso the lack of the obvious "wind". Yes, some kites handle dips in wind speed a bit better..but a lot of that also is how the flier controls the kite during those lags.

IMO, for the price I don't see how anyone can go wrong purchasing the beamer II series as a entry level - intermediate level kite. The kites have a great all around pull and are great for all kinds of traction sports, including boarding.

yeah would go for a blade or bullet and about 4mtr at minimum as you will progress quickly and wish you had started out bigger. Just get used to your kite in lower winds first and save a few bruises , sent you a u2u too.

hey ok i got me beamerII 3.6 on friday took it out saterday couldnt get it up (10 mph winds) i forgot to bring the manuel with me, turns out i had it the wrong way round (N00b or what!) lol so theres been no wind all week so far! but on thursday theres suppost to be a 17mph wind so iam gona get up nice n early n catch that, should be a bit of fun..... thanks again fo advice, (part of me wishes i got a biger kite...but meh i can alwase borrow my mates 13m...) :P
