moving to the dark side...

TextTextSo I'm the proud owner of a dudek nucleon 31 2009 wing. I plan on taking my years of kitesurfing self taught I'd Like to add, and applying it to the world of flight.... I will be kiting my new wing for a minimum of 20 hours and running down a nice slope before I add a propeller... My dream of flight is suddenly here....

People will say you should take lessons , I've never been someone to take lessons, so yes I will be self taught but am always open to good advice. Kitesurfing/ power kiting isimy hero. I love flying. I would live to start studying more into it.

Sorry ... The internet has become my journal HAHA.
Actually thanks to power kite forum, I learned almost all I know about the kite game from you guys so actually thank all of you guys who were doing it before me and documenting it.

Know your conditions , know your gear, study flight patterns, study scenarios , know weight limits, prop- twist, helmet on, rear puckered, yeeeee haw! look out for the cows!

So I found about a couple hours or so to kite my Nucleon 31 in some extremely light variable inland wind...
(2-7mph) gusting 8 mph.

It took me about 30 minutes to finally get her to glide smoothly... Mind you I've been flying foils for a long time now...

It's a very unique feeling and had got me extremely intrigued.

Right as I had about 5 minutes of Sun left I was able to run connected to my kiting harness and get it above my head before it fell back ... Wind has left my sails at this point...

Looking forward to this weekend, definitely heading to the beach for some smooth seagull worthy wind...

Over and out!

Yeah I'm right at the lower weight certification, its a reflex wing basically is kinda like a speed 3 ... It's super tuck resistant, looking forward to flying slow... I'll probably give soSouthside of matagorda a shot first, if no good continue to port lavaca then padre...

Partial collapses are inevitable... Having a large or small wing determine the severity of the violence/speed when your wing takes shape again...

I should be more clear, with a larger wing you going to have micro wing tip folds/collapses. Depending on how much you start tugging on lines will dictate blah.

So i got to kite my wing some more today, I finally realized this is a whole new world. It has allot of similarities to power kiting, but is also nothing like it at the same time. I've learned kiting such a large reflex wing doesn't happen right away, it takes time to learn all of its quirks just like a new kite. I got to strap into the kiting harness again with good results... THis one particularly doesn't like allot of brake input, likes it's B lines to be tugged on instead...

update....... #DOON GOONING

So I finally am making headway on this monster 31, which is actually a approx:26m projected ... (wing).... reflex by the way :)

WOW so my point of view on flight has completely changed since about 5 hours ago. I finally got her out in smooth laminar wind starting at 7 knots and ending the day at around 12 knots (beach wind)...

So the reflex straps are awesome ..... WOW so awesome!!!!!!!! letting them all the way out reminded me of hot launching my 17m speed 1 in about 9 knots.... :cool2::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

SOOOO COOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No havent gotten video but thats comming soon. And yes I finally got the nerve to hook into my harness. HAHAHA!!! i hooked in like a kite surfing kite ! HAHA WOW , so cool though. I was soaring some small dunes ( few feet off the ground...) backwards ..... lol !!!

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

SO Im currently modifying the hell out of this stadium seat i have and my kiting harness and heading down to the 9 footers this week. I'm craving more altitude , I will share my insanity of a doon goon rig i have created as soon as possible....

When its worthy of video recording... i mean.... So well ...

HAVE A GOOD WEEK EVERY BODY!!! SEE YOU ON THE WATER OR 50 FEET ABOVE IT!!!!!!!:cool2::cool2::cool2:

How do you know? Did you die, and come back to serve as a warning to others?

Now that the sarcasm is out of my system, I completely agree on lessons or at least flying/learning with a local club. It'll help you learn things to check for in terms of damage/wear/tear, or what you may be doing that seems safe, but isn't, cue boom to the face yesterday for me.

Looks like you've got some good ground handling!

Gotta say though, I agree with Dman. Get lessons!

There are a lot of things that can happen and if you're not prepared for them...bad sh%t can happen! And adding a motor adds another level of complexity as well.

Good luck...have fun...been safe!

Best advice ever given to me:

It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Nope, didn't die, should have though. Without the training that I received from my instructor, even though I thought my skills in all the other sport were enough that I could be self taught, I would have just become a crater maker in the desert on a hot July morning. Even with my training, 60 plus flights, and many hours of air time, I still struggled to get my wits about me as I plummeted towards the ground struggling deploy my reserve. Had it not been for several days of reserve deployment training in a simulator during my lessons, I never would have been able to get it out in the situation I found myself in.

But what the hell do I know, I've only been flying for 14 years?
