Wind was punchy and changing direction a lot. I was on my 10m Rally (which I kinda hate for those conditions). Finally hitting my groove, cruising along around 15-20 mph and I look at my kite for a second and when I look back down, there's a damn sprinkler head sticking up about 6 inches (and it's like a foot in front of my board.). No time to do anything... The board just STOPPED. I didn't. Landed hard on my shoulder / back / head / neck. Total yardsale. Rung my bell pretty good. Pretty sure I disintegrated the sprinkler head.

I was very happy to have helmet, knee and elbow pads on today. Would be in the hospital (at the least) if I wasn't wearing all that gear.

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to share / #@%$#! for a moment. In this sport, you can do everything right and still get hurt. Wear your gear.

Dave - that just sucks! Serves that sprinkler head right to get disintegrated like that. Glad you're (reasonably) OK. Good tip about wearing the safety gear. Easy to get lulled into complacency sometimes. Sort of like seat belts in our cars; most of us haven't used them in a while but boy could we ever use them someday.

I'm a wimp. I wiped out on a field with my landboard long ago and haven't done it since unless I'm on gravel or pavement and can clearly see my surface. If i'm on grass then i'm in the buggy. Glad you weren't too banged up

Glad you wear the gear and are OK. I feel your pain. I have not run into a sprinkler head since ours are all the pop-up type but I have tripped over a few holes on my Coyotes where the sprinkler heads lie in holes, waiting to grab wheels.

I still think the worst encounter is looking down at a fresh pile of dog crap 6 inches from your wheels and knowing I will not react in time to miss it.

I took out one of these a couple months ago. Got a nice tailbone bruise for the effort, despite it being the pop-up type. I'm with you on riding with gear... I'm not great about remembering to ride with kneepads/wrist guards, or my full shin protection from unicycling, but a helmet, gloves, and if landboarding around here, pants are my minimum. Hope you feel better quickly. Funny enough, I had seen a different sprinkler sitting up before I took the one I did out, and stopped to push it in, to make sure it didn't happen, damn Murphy and his law.
