Today was definitely epic. I loaded up with a 2.6m and took off at 12. 1.6m later I was finally able to stop. Up to and sustained 38mph for the
entire 1.6 miles to the road.
I rode all the way back with the kite high and my spirits low.
A lot too much a little too quick.
Flew for a while on 1.8m. It was good until i was stuck in the goopy stuff. It took a long time to get back home.
Good rides on a 4.7m later in the day.
At one point there were 5-6 of us sticking together and just going back and forth. The lead person turned and we all turned. For 2 hrs straight!
Then, three of us were sitting at the highway waiting for the sun to exit behind the clouds. Then, it was a full on race to get back to camp.

Very nicely put! I loved sharing the stoke with you and the gang in the back and forth you described, that was the highlight so far! The 4.7 RAGE
was a beauty to see slide on by while I was strong arming my 3.2 NS3. I could slowly pass Mark with his 2.8 and even keep up with John on your land
sailor, but then you'd come through like a shark in the water with that big black kite and it was like watching the dorsal fin slice by above the
water.
I too had a harrowing start to the day. While I should have stuck with my 3.8m LS2 I foolishly put my 6m P3 in the sky and shot out like a rocket. I
didn't have a way of measuring speed but I'm sure I too was in the high 30s ripping across the playa fully sheeted out and still going like hell.
Here's the fun (and STUPID) part. I didn't know how to use the kite bar's pull-pull trim system so I was stuck at full power the whole way. The
system has a red strap that has a + on it and a black strap with a - on it. I was thinking + meant increase trim to decrease power and not the other
way around. Red - of course (I now know) means decrease power to the kite but I just didn't figure that out going at the top speed of my life. Go
figure. Speed increase way beyond comfort leads to IQ decrease.
I did come to a stop on the way out by going up wind until I finally came to a stop. I thought I've got to get back to camp now miles away. I turned
around and started to haul ass to camp. I was going even faster on the way back. About half way back I came to the decision that I valued my body
more than my kite and said "screw it" to myself and popped the chicken loop at about 40 mph. Well it worked. Of course now I've got a ball on the
end of the kite lines and I'm still going 40 mph so I circled the wagons and ended up totally circling the kite to try to keep it from getting dragged
to much. I can safely say that I've field tested to reef line system and it deploys as advertised. The kite is a little buffed up but really is in
surprisingly good shape. Those things I can buy again; me? Not so much.
Here's the fun part: Mark followed me out and he had a tow system on his buggy that he had personally fabricated but never used. We hooked it up and
we tandom-buggied all the way back to camp. Worked great! It is good to have good friends on the playa.
Man, what a day! I too had a lot of fun with some great, great people. To top off the day a bunch of us watched the space station fly overhead in
the early evening darkness (super, super cool by the way) and then stayed out as the stars exploded in the sky.
Perfect day for an Old Dog on old Coyotes .
Tomorrow back to your regularly scheduled 50mph gusts. :Ange09::Ange09:
Lest anyone reading these IBX threads thinks for a second that Ken(2) doesn't bring it with his Coyotes, think again! He lights up the playa and
covers the kind of ground us buggiers are laying down. I've seen him make epic speed run after epic speed run up and down the playa all week with a
whole lot of ripstop in the air. Balls like bull.
Wednesday was a mixed wind day. Periods of decent wind followed by a long afternoon lull, only to finish at sunset with some absolutely exquisite
light steady winds for the final two hours. The awesomeness of those final breezes was it gave me the ideal chance to fly my new (and strikingly
beautiful I might add) deep blue 12m Peak3. After flying postage stamps all week in high winds (1.5m NS3, 3.8m LS2) the 12m P3 looked like Goliath out
there.
Woody (Slapbasswoody) with a 9m Chronos and his son Jack in a borrowed custom built land sailor (courtesy of the generous Jeepersjoey) made run after
run back and forth as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon. That was a really special ending to the day,
What can I say? I seem to have a special relationship with my 12m Peaks. This one was no different. I love that kite! That kite was seemingly
custom built for exactly those conditions. Set your line out of a turn, slide the capture ball down the trim line, park the kite, and haul arse for
miles. Woody thought I was going about 45mph. He knows that because he was consistently clocking himself at 55 and figures his passing was at about 10
mph. :D
Great times with great friends. As Bladerunner already mentioned, back to same old, same old today with winds into the 50s today. :o

What will today bring?
Sounds like one hellofa ride! Sounds like you were over thinking things. If you have ever served in the military you know that there is an acronym for
everything. The one That comes to mind that my LT. used to use is (K.I.S.S)
Keep
It
Simple
Stupid
The last two are interchangeable. Haha. Sounds like you're having a good time and learning some lessons though. I'm super Jealous. I'm stuck in
Seattle working on a Ferry Boat. Try not to have too much fun.
Yesterday ended with light winds and Windstruck got to fly his session saver.
Today started with moderate winds with forecasts of nuclear winds by midday.
Being an old cautious newb, I kept my kites in the truck with Lucy-dog then took out a Blokart. Hit pb of 42mph before getting a flat.
Packed it in before noon as winds turned on.
Now 37 mph gusting to 71 according to NWS.
I believe it.
Tomorrow will be epic.
Always on the steep part of the learning curve.

And a couple Manta Singles for friends to ride.
I went out to see if our buggies got blown away.
They are still there but the event tent is all but gone .:shocked2:
Nothing but some bent poles left? I suspect those who braved it out did something with the rest of it?

Ken(2): What ended up happening with the tent? I hope it didn't shred and blow into NV.
My wind meter at around 1:00 PM was reading sustained winds in the mid 40 mph range with gusts in the mid 50s. I clocked a max st 56.2 mph. I think I
left the playa before the Brown Out was in full strength.
At one point my hat went flying and got tangled up in some sage brush about 100 yards or so downwind. A running shoe was skipping its way right along
next to my hat as it skipped down the playa. As I was retrieving my hat and somebody's shoe I looked over and saw a bloecart imbedded in the brush.
Walked over to it only to say "Oh look, there's a buggy too!" I dragged them all back to camp. What a day!
wow there was some intense winds yesterday - saw some great video. It's nasty when it starts to flake off the playa and throw chunks mixed in with the
dust.
I'm not sure if John Chilese is on PKF much but he posted a photo set from wednesday - I hope it's okay with John to re-post a link here, he always
takes nice photos (google photo link): https://goo.gl/photos/7UsXVTWgYkhRnT6R8

Nice!!! My Born-Kite 9.5m LongStar2 got quite the exposure! For those who don't know what kite that is (and you know who you are) its the BEAUTIFUL
kite with the large white star on a black, gold, and white background. Like I said, beautiful! :D
A HUGE shout out of thanks to the organizers of IBX2017. What an event! Thursday's Brown Out was completely off the chain. Already counting the days
until IBX2018, now less than 360 days away!
Another amazing event complete with a whole batch of great new memories.
Nice to meet the SLC crew and so many folks I hadn't seen for years.
A big thanks to all the event organisers. It is comforting to know that the team is strong and the event will go on.
While you all think I am nuts screamin' around on those Coyotes, this trip confirmed I am actually safer on them. :Ange09:
My kite got ripped out of my hands when unhooked for 40mph-ish winds when hit with a 50. If I was on blades I would have been shot downwind ( again )
with my kite. Instead I was stuck in my buggy as my kite blew away. My other boo boo happened when I 1st went out on my buggy. My very old varnished
tires had a certain amount of slip on the playa. My new back tires had a LOT more grip and I had a slow but scary OBE.
On a couple of occasions I was hit with hard gusts and had an OEE. Off Earth Experience. Crazy as it sounds I am getting used to those and am pretty
relaxed. Worried only about keeping the kite overhead and tight. It's a huge playa and you have to touch back down sometime. :duh:
I was truly impressed with the 3.5 LS2 and how it dealt with the strong gusty winds. Sorry I didn't get a run with it but am very interested.
The range of winds and number of miles that Joey put on with his 7.5 Apex was totally impressive!
I LOVE IBX. No matter how old I get I leave the Playa having learned something, with a big smile on my face and eager to go back.
I hope that I was able to talk to each of you. There were several people that I met but immediately forgot who you were. That makes me sad.
I donated a flexifoil line set and I think Vincent got it. Vincent, what is your handle on here? Did you get your VW camper fixed and made it home?
I donated a 7m Beemer and I think it went to the gent I was talking to before the dinner. He had a timid Auzzie Shepherd dog. What was your handle
on here?
I donated a whole bunch of pool-ball kite stakes. I hope that each of you got one (or more). I hope that you enjoyed them! Think of IBX2017 when
you use them.
A friend donated a HUGE number of tires. It was not until after the Hurricane that I wondered if they ended up way over the mountain or if someone
took care of them. I hope it was not much of a burden.
SlapBassWoody (Paul) - Thanks for driving to the power lines
If I met you or talked with you...can you remind me who you were?
Dirt Nap #2 was missing the cooler cover. But, Cerebite (John) ran into it, picked it up thinking it was garbage and then put it onto the cooler once
he found it.
I was one of the proud that made it to all the Dirt Nap locations. I had to be creative when I got to the end since I could not find the bottle
opener.
I obtained a Personal Best: 50.9 mph. It was very controlled and felt good. However, it did end in a full-speed side slide as I stopped VERY close
to the drainage pool barbed wire fence.
My landsailer did well. John crashed on it once when a freak wind came through. The same wind pulled me sideways.
The wife sat in the landsailer on Thursday and it immediately flipped on her. She did ride it for 40 minutes late Friday. I think she will be
joining me again for the entire week.
Bobby and Brian and Morrie: Thank you SO MUCH for hosting this event. It was outstanding, yet again.
The loss of the Event Tent was unfortunate. The indication of the impact of the wind was evident in the twisted I-beams of the Event Tent frame.
Wow. Just wow!
I am going through my hours of video and will post links here once I get going.
Thank you to SlapBassWoody (Paul) for buying breakfast for EVERYONE on Friday morning! And for towing me home. But, most importantly, for bringing
son Jack. Good father. Good kid.
Mark and Steve: Thanks for riding with me and testing the tandem setup. I think we need a few of those for next year.
Lastly, thanks to John (Cerebite) and Amy for providing shelter (RV) as well as tasty meals to everyone that knocked on their door.
Since work (usually) shuts for the week of Thanksgiving...I will probably be at Ivanpah again. Please start thinking about ways that you can attend
Nov 18-25th!
