Introduction to Buggying on Ivanpah Workshop
If this is your first time kite buggying on a dry lake it will be an experience that will get your adrenalin running. First of all we want this to be
a safe experience; the surface is as hard as a blacktop parking lot and the winds will probably be stronger than you ever buggied in before.
I will be moderator of a Beginners Workshop to be held at 10 AM Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, meeting at main tent.
I am asking for experienced dry Lake Buggiers to help me with these workshops so the new people can learn from our good and bad experiences.
Conditions permitting a small course will be set up afterwards for the first timers to develop your skills on.

Thanks, being a beginner any pointers will help. A couple of questions;
1. Somewhere I read that the dry lake bed is real hard on buggy tires. Now, I'm not planning any high speed runs, freestyle, etc so is this a major
concern for a beginner? My tires only have a few hours on them, and are 2 ply.
2. Generally what are the winds like during this event. I know that Mother Nature doesn't like to be predictable but what has history shown?
Thanks
Looking forward to the experience

You will wear thru 2 ply tires in a day, get a set of 4 ply and you will last a week. This is my 5 year and have been in winds from 0- 55 mph. Most
days start off light and build to a steady flow by sunset...........aj

Even with the 4 ply you gotta watch how aggressive you are. Last year I burned through a brand new set of 4 plys after the first 2 days - sucks when
you get a blow out across the lakebed. But that's going fast and really scrubbing the tires a lot and buggying from morning until dusk without taking
much of a break. You can make them last longer by watching the inflation pressure and easing up on the turns etc and not sliding and playing like you
are on a beach.

Yea, if you are used to grass or sand riding, you are prolly used to scrubbing speed by sliding. This is the tire killer! Learn, instead, to gently
edge upwind and bring your kite CAREFULLY (so you dont get OBE'd) higher, and you will gradually slow down. Not as impressive or fun as a huge
slide, but will save your tires.

Fran,
I am not sure of my schedule but would love to help out with your beginner workshop. I think this is an awesome idea to help beginners get out on the
playa.
Look me up and we can work out some details.

RE: Beginner Buggy Workshop
I am happy to contribute my skills and understanding of playa-buggy technique at your workshop.
We don't have to meet before-hand to go over anything.
We both know what is needed and when.
I'll be there.
Tires:
I typically put well over 500 miles on a set of rear tires before they need changing.
While I don't spend a lot of time side-ways on my buggy, I do like to slide turns - Often.
I watch my tire pressure carefully and keep it over 20 psi.
Pressure can alter ride-comfort (softer=smoother) and grip (harder=faster).
Adjust your pressure so you have a balance between comfort and grip that suits you and your riding style.
Sliding turns on softer tires will increase wear-rates.
Ride like Fritz:
When he had a blow-out across the lakebed, Fritz Gramkowski rode all the way back to camp on two wheels.
So there!
Safen Up! Buggy On!

My first year I was paranoid about tires and getting a flat when I was out there and not having spares and having my whole week ruined with nothing to
do, etc etc. I got paranoid with wearing out my tires fast from what people where posting, but it ended up being a non-concern. I've used the same set
of slick for two NABX trips and they'll probably be fine for another. Make sure you get four ply for sure.
I mostly just cruise when I'm there, I get all I want of turning a lot on the soccer fields around here! I'm also pushing 300lbs, so I think that
keeps me from side slipping much!
Now I know that even if all else goes wrong, there is always the option of racing your shot car with Corey, 'cause lord knows he doesn't buggy during
NABX, what with having to hold court and everything! :P

Well, slicks are cheap if you buy them before hand, I figure what I don't use this year, I'll use next year. I've got 3 sets of slicks going down with
me and a set of the original 4 ply ribbed tires. Starting out tubeless, but have tubes just in case.
I like speed, I push pretty hard, I love sliding. I've never been on the playa, so it looks like a recipe for tire wear to me.

from ancient lore, we once all rode together and not knowing a place, would often go out to explore it.
once the lama was our leader.
we are asking again, if our leader, who is not to old, nor infirm, nor feeble of mind, would mind, leading us one more time!!??
could it happen?
stay tuned......
