I have a simple Garmin etrex 10 which works very nicely. Tracks speed and distance showing max speed, average moving speed, time moving, time
stopped, etc. Has many other functions that I have never used. It may no longer be made. There are some later versions (etrex 20, 30,?) which are
probably available. Ebay or Amazon. Got mine at REI on clearance for $80 a year or so ago. Nice thing about garmin (may be true of other brands
too, but I don't know) is that the files can be uploaded to GPSVisualizer.com and maps made and files converted to text. I enter mine into a
spreadsheet and get speed reading every 30 seconds or so. Here are some maps of a recent session. (Not - I was walking through the woods, not
riding....)
