Well, This guy got the forum right anyway.

Haven't seen any posts about the elephant in the room?
Maybe it's an old subject that was settled long ago.
It's hard for the Confederate in me to say it, however.
I think we need more regulation from on high about who can and can't post.

Forgive me Jeff Davis. :smug:

Not sure on the solution, but the level of spamming seems really high lately. What a waste of time. I keep seeing some sweaty punk down in his Command Center never seeing the light of day.

I do not think we should have posts by new users reviewed before being posted. It discourages new users from even posting in the first place. It's the reason I have never posted on exetreme kites.

What I do think is a good solution is to add a buffer time between new post of say, 15 minutes. That won't get rid of the spam but it will at least reduce the amount by a substantial amount.

First, I think some of these things come from "bots" - they don't always have a person posting each one. (Of course, there are people running the bots.)

I'm active on a couple other forums that don't have this problem. As far as I know, one of them only requires new users to send an email to the webmaster saying "Hey I'm a real person, please me join." They also have moderators who can delete spam, but I really haven't seen any show up.

The other forum is run by a friend of mine. Here's what he told me he does:

"All sites are under attack, what you do depends on how much of a wall you want to erect and how much of a PITA it becomes to new registrants.

Here is some of the things we do (and stuff still, of course, leaks through)

1) We ban entire country IP ranges. Places like S. Korea, Ukraine, China, Russia can't even access the site.

2) The website times the page load and if the form is filled out too quickly ie bot instead of human, it rejects the registration. I'm not sure what the time limit is - something like three to five seconds.

3) We use some sort of human check - in our case, simply answering what city the club is in. A human will know the answer. Even better, most of the people overseas who are human but registering to spam the site won't take the time to look up the answer."

Some of what you can do is limited by software - in the case of the first site, the software is very old, so the request email may be their best option.

Who knows what spam gets swatted in the middle of the night.

There has been a SEVERE uptick in the amount of spam hitting the forum recently. Most people don't see a lot of the spam because it gets nuked while most people are sleeping, but some of it still gets through because I still have to do stuff like mow the lawn, shovel the driveway and feed the fur tribe.

I whack a lot of the span during Russia/Hanoi daylight hours, but it''s hard to gauge when it comes in at other times, so if am offline for a few hours, spam can still hammer the forum pretty hard.

I just raised some concerns with Bob..... will see where it goes.

ATB,
Sam

Thanks for the hard work Sam. Being a middle of the night person I sometimes see the toilet flush.
