Add a Strop line between the tops of the handles and you're set to hook into a harness.

Sure, I do sometimes. Rig a strop (piece of rope) between the tops of your handles. About 2' or 60 cm works but you can play with lengths to you
liking. Use sheathed running line from the marine store or climbing rope and make loops in the end for attaching to the handles.
Or Ozone makes a strop, I think.
It helps if your handles have leads out the back of the tops with a stopper knot that you can put a larS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s head against.
Put the strop around the spreader bar hook and it takes the load off. If you like this approach but wear out a lot of strops on the hook, Peter Lynn
makes a spreader bar with a pulley in place of the hook.

ozone has a good strop for $15, worth the price so you dont have to keep replacing your home made one that breaks every week or so.

Also get some decent flexible clear tubing to cover your strop. I have been using homemade strops for a while now and found tubing for pond pumps
works quite well. Also cheap!

With handles though, doesn't the tubing only work with a rolling spreader bar as opposed to a hook?
I would think the friction of the tubing on a hook spreader could limit your range of handle motion but I've never tried it and my rope strops have
held OK and they are pretty easy to replace.

Cheap solution, make a strop, buy a cheap pulley for under $10 from the local hardware store, put the pulley on the strop, tie a short loop to the
other end of the pulley. Just long enough to loop over the hook on your harness. Works like a charm for a low budget solution, you can still pull down
on the strop and get it to fall off the hook like you could with a normal strop, but you'll only wear through the line every couple months instead of
every couple days.
