What Kite?

Hi folks,
It seems like everyone is always asking “What kite / size should I buy?” I guess I’m no different.
I weigh about 160 lbs and am currently KGBing on an MBS Pro 6 with a 10m Frenzy (06) on hard pack sand on the beach at low tide. With this setup I can get going at about 5-6 knots and right now my upper comfort level is about 10 knots. I’m sure that as my experience level increases (I’m fairly new at this with no prior board-sports experience) I’ll be using this kite in higher winds but for now that’s what it is.
I’m very comfortable cruising both ways, have no problem going up wind and I’ve started riding toe-side both ways doing carving transitions from heel-side to toe-side and back. I’ve also started power sliding a bit, mostly when stopping but sometimes while edging hard while just cruising. I haven’t managed to do a power slide transition from heel to toe-side yet but I’m working on it. I haven’t done any 180s or started jumping yet.
What I’m looking for is another kite that I can switch to for stronger winds. I don’t know if this is generally true everywhere but where I ride as the wind gets stronger it also tends to get gustier so I’m thinking I want a de-powerable and stable foil. I’ve pretty much made up my mind on the Access 2 but what I’m not sure about is whether to get the 4m or 6m. I’m not really looking for much (if any) overlap at 10 knots since I’m sure I’ll be flying the Frenzy past that soon. I think I’d like to be able to just get going underpowered in the 10-12 knot range with lots of headroom to take it up to the high teens or more.
I’ve been told the 4m would be too small but unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to try either size.
I’d really appreciate any advice you guys could give me. If you think that I should go for more overlap let me know; I’m open to all suggestions. From my experiences since the end of last summer and this spring, out most common winds are 7-10 knots but we do sometimes get days in the 12-15 or even 17-20 knot ranges.

Thanks in advance,
~Dave

Are you flying up at nahant? I have some dual line friends who have been up there commenting on a landboarder or two showing up over the past few months.

I see you saw my post at powerline - thanks for coming.

get the bigger sizes....6m-8m with depower. you'll most likely grow out of your small kites when you become power hungry and and Air Hound...

eventually you'll call 10 knots LOW WIND....

I use 4 kites mainly at 155lbs:

3-9knots = Flysurfer Mastair 12m (pulls like a 15m or 17m)
8-15knots = Flysurfer Psycho3 13m
14-25knots = Flysurfer Pulse 10m, if gusty use Phantom 12m
20-30+knots = PeterLynn Phantom 9m

our Local Frenzy guru recently "converted" to closed cell for the safety, relaunch, water option, and stability....

Hi B-Roc,
Yea, Nahant is only about 20 minutes from me and it’s my regular spot. There are a few regulars there that board and / or buggy that I’ve known since I started last summer. I guess I’m one of them now.

I’m not sure what you mean about the post a Powerline- which one?

I thought you posted here because I posted there (I'm Brian_O at powerline) that those users should come to this forum. Either way, welcome and if I ever get my lazy butt to nahant, I'll look for you.

Keep your Frenzy for light winds up to 10 mph, but for 10 mph+ take a hard look at the Peter Lynn Scorpion twinskin ARC. I'm flying the 10m in my bug and reallly liking it. It's got an awful lot of adjustability and lots of de-power. I'm not an aggressive rider but I know i'll be comfortable with it from 10 to 20 kts.
Very easy to set up, launch and tear down.
