I had a 5m Haka here for a bit - I really was not that impressed. For a fixed bridled freestyle kite, it's hard to beat the Blade IVs...

I agree with DaV. Right now I feel the Blade IVs are the way to go for freestyle type power kites. Well worth the money. I have flown lots of different kites and so far found the Blade IV 4.9 to equal if not excel the Quadrifoil Competition XL kite.

I've got a feeling the other Blade IV's will be just as good as the 4.9. After only a few minutes on the Blade IV I knew the kite was on top of it's game.

The 5m Haka does have issues. Its a 2 line bias kite, which does take some getting used to. If you like to fly on brakes, this kite isnt for you. There are quite a few FORMER Haka owners out there, including myself. I experienced issues with back stalls, pressure problems, and tip tuck. When pressurized and the wind is in the sails upper range, its fast and grunty. Lift is average at best. The Blade IV 4.9 and 6.5 would be a much better option. The BIV 6.5/4.9, Bego 600/400, and the 5m Crossfire are the best fixed bridle sails Ive owned.

I have to disagree on the comments about the Haka. I have been using the HAKA now since it replaced the Riot and have not had any of the problems that are being mentioned here. I have the 3, 5 and 7 meter and the kites kick butt!

Super solid in the air, very fast and lots of grunt. This kite does like to be flown aggressively with very little rear line tension. Perhaps the setup was not quite right on the models that were tested but the HAKA is an awesome performer.

We flew the same kite and had the same issues. WOC, are you flying buggy, board, or static with your Hakas? I had the Haka set up with just enough brake to reverse launch and flew it herk and jerk without brake input but still no joy

i always knew the flexies were good, but i just saw the haka and didn't really know anything about them..

so i will go with a blade. which size would one recommend?

The BIV 6.5--great all rounder. Adjustable AOA bridle makes this kite so versitile! Windrange from around 6/7 mph up to 20!

Wow, the bridles are very sparse on that 6.5. That thing is made for speed. Very efficient with the wind I bet. But really Don, 20 mph?! You've been there with it?

Edit: I looked and it is rated for 19. I haven't been comfy with any of my kites at the max rated wind speed though. I guess you are much more the expert than I. That isn't a tag I would give myself anyway.

Yes 20 mph at Folly which is right at the top of her range. Expert, hardly. Borderline insane? Dont answer that! I always start in low winds with everything Ive flown and work my way up. The Blade flies so well you cant help but push the upper limit of its range. 20 is a handful, but controlable!

I use the HAKA's mostly with the buggy. Not really for boarding as I try to stick with the depowers for that. We have a lot of guys out here that use the HAKA with the buggies and the mountainboards and everyone seems to love them. I haven't had anyone complain about any of the HAKA's at all, most of the time they are raving about them. Maybe it is something to do with the air and the dry lake beds out here, not sure. The HAKA does have a lot more lift than the race kites (Jojo's, Razor's and Yakuza's) and some of the guys boost huge on them here. I do know that the HAKA is not very forgiving in turbulent gusty conditions so maybe that has something to do with it. It excels in constant forward motion and doesn't like to be stalled much. Only use the brakes when you want to boost but only with appropriate speed in the kite.

Maybe the one you had was a dud but that is very hard to believe as Ozone has some of the highest quality control of any manufacturer out there. Perhaps it just didn't mesh with your style of flying - not sure but anyways, the HAKA has been an awesome kite for us. Different strokes.

Winds here can be flakey for sure but I had trouble at the beach as well with a clean SE wind. They were thermal breezes so that too could have factored in. True, Ozone quality is top drawer but I didnt say "dud":D. Im def a brake input flier. Hey different stroke/kites for different folks. Thanx for the intel!
