I like the zip lock bags idea because you really don't need to haul the weight to the site. Didn't the socks pick up lots of sand? My field I usually fly in has a pile of sand in the middle for some reason, so I could even fill the ziplocks there.

Socks were down at Ivanpah on the lakebed, so mostly dust, no sand to be found. The PKD bags are almost like the zip lock idea, but with a velcro tab to close them up. But I'd say go with the Zip Lock if you've got to buy something, easy to find, easy to use, and cheap enough that it's not a problem if they happen to go missing.
