Surf kites don't really make good recreational fliers. They are huge, fly slowly, and seldom do more than fly from side to side. Tight spins and
high performance control is not required as their main purpose is to supply stable power for surfing.
But you could buy a trainer surf kite. These are small kites used to teach basic control while standing on land. They are small and therefore faster
than the full size surf kites. You can't surf with them, but the advantage would be that when you are ready for the water, you already have some
experience with surf kite control.
Just a thought.
Additionally, I always promote taking lessons. You can try a variety of gear before buying and take advantage of the experience of others rather than
starting from scratch on your own. You'll become better faster! Safer too.
I've heard there are many good kite surfing schools in Florida who provide gear.
