NYC/LI average wind speeds and kite buying info (need help please)
hi, anyone familiar with the winds around nyc/LI?
i am purchasing my first traction kite and am looking at a little devil 3.0, as per the advice of a kite store owner in vegas, but that was for the
desert southwest where the winds often blow strong and steady.
i am asking your advice here because i do not know, but the winds here seem to be wimpy and inconsistent. i just think of all them HOT summer days
with nary a breeze. of course, the shore may be different.
i will be using this kite with doomwheels, and eventually, a dirtsurfer. i am 5'6" and weigh 145lbs; will a 3.0 kite be too small for me and
the average winds in my area?
thanks
michael
ps- is there a website that i can check the average winds on the beaches around here?

The inland festivals I attended in NY were offen starving for wind. It's certainly better by the sea. But if your plans are for kiteskating or
buggying, I'd suggest a bigger kite - perhaps 5m.
You should be careful using large kites in strong wind, but if your average wind is less than 15 mph, you will find yourself frustrated standing
motionless on your skates with a 3m kite.
Look for a 5m qualdline land foil with quad handles. This sounds like the best setup for your conditions.
Regarding weather, try this:

hey mike
where do you fly,skate?
i buggy alot in new jersey.
this time of year when the beaches are open we have to move inland to parks and parking lots. i use my 4 meter and 5 meter kites the most in the
summer.
yes some days we just sit around waiting for wind that never comes. before you go out check the weather. we check before we go out as the wind dir.
plays a big part on where we are going.

ny/nj flying/riding spots
hey, my little devil 3M has arrived. though it seems as if i should have bought a larger, all arounder, corey at the kite shop insisted that this was
the size i needed, that i ought not to be overpowered. i haven't flown it yet but i am hoping to hit some beaches during the warm weather despite
the bech going crowd (if it ever stops raining). my target areas include sandy hook NJ (part of the gateway national recreation area, not governed by
local authorities), floyd bennet field in brooklyn (might also be part of gateway), and fire island national seashore (i ought to be able to find
someplace along 32 miles of beach to fly). have you been to any of these spots? what good fields/beaches do you know of that are good to ride on any
time of year around here?

het tek
you can`t fly at sandy hook this time of year. after labor day is ok for kite flying, buggying. plus it costs $10 to park there for the day. i went to
floyd bennet feild last sunday with my blokart. if you are just going to fly the kite your ok. but as soon as your moving with some type of wheels
your going to need a permint. its costs $50 a year and you need some type of ins. i had to bring a copy of my homeowers ins to get a permnit for
bennet field.

hey mike
yea i know. rules, rules and more rules.
you can fly your kite at coney island feild #6. thats a field set aside for kites. i went to lido beach last year with my buggy. i had cops racing
after me with lights their on. they couldn`t keep up with me so i just stopped. they had some nice words with me. i`ll never go there again.
