Are my kites insured?

So once a week I pack up most of my kites, landboard and buggy and head to the beach. Gotta be prepared for all conditions. If the wind is good, I'll go in the water, if not, I'll use my land kites and board, so there's always some type of equipment in my car.

I have both homeowners and car insurance. Are my kites insured if someone steals my stuff from my car? If not, what type of insurance do I need in order to protect my gear?

In Canada, with the home insurance, we are insured for goods outside the home for a limited amount. This amount should be specified on your police (sometime about 10% of property value) or maybe 10K more less.

The car insurance only covers the car, and nothing else.

It's a good idea to have both car and home insurance at same place, because when you get your stolen articles in your car, then the claim process is simpler, and if the window is broken for example, only 1 deductible may apply. some company gives a rebate too.

if you get your kite or board stolen at the beach, you should still be insured. sometimes it may not be worth to claim, because of the deductible cost and police price will increase the following year.

Home or renters insurance generally covers any of your property no matter where it is (ie: in your car, etc.).

Ditto, what Buzz says about the deductible though...

Best thing would be to talk directly to your insurance agent. They would be able to give you the right info about your policy and what it does and does not cover. There are just to many different policies out there with too many different options. If it is not covered then you should be able to add on some type of coverage to your current policy that will cover your gear.

If you have an "umbrella" policy with your home-owners or renters insurance, you may also be covered for liability should you hurt someone with the kite. But you must check with your agent to make sure "extreme sports" are not excluded and what the definition of extreme is.

Thanks for the replies,,,everyone! I'll talk to my insurance company...fortunately for me, I use the same company for the home and car.

BTW, if this has happened to you...did you need to provide a pic, Serial #, or give some justification to them in terms of item price?

If stolen, then a copy of a police report that describes the stolen property, then written documentation of price, such as frm a catalog or web page, reciept, etc.
