Noob Wanted To Say Hello

I'm a noob in Kite ATB Land Boarding and I just wanted to say hello.

I've been flying 2 line Stunt kites for a while now and I recently started flying Quads (Rev 1.5 SLE). I enjoyed snowboarding, skateboarding, ripstick, roller blades etc and now I want to combine Kite flying and boarding (Specifically ATB).

I'm going to start reading the FAQs on this board and hopefully purchase my first ATB and Kite soon. Any advice is always welcome.

Thanks.

Welcome to PKF! Where in the Eastbay (Norcal) do you fly?
Come by Shoreline in Moutainview, CA during weekends. That's where I buggy. You'll find few ATB riders there as well. A good place to start, if you're a newbie. You'll meet both experienced & new fliers.

One thing to think about is that Rev Powerblasts give one heck of a ride ! Foils are great but if you like your rev's nothing says you have to move away from them.
I met a fellow ( but forgot his name ) at NABX that was getting some amazing air + wind range out of his big Powerblast !

Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.

I used to fly dual line stunt kites at Shoreline and then I got into flying Quads this year. I actually saw several ATB riders at shoreline and that's when I got interested in ATB. Man, I getting all kinds of different feed back from several ATB riders... Some says start with 2 or 3m foil one said 5m because of my weight but from what I've gathered, I'm starting with a 2m, practice flying it, then hop on the board. It looks like 500 - 600 bucks to get started with new gear. I've been combing craigslist hoping to find a used one but no luck.

Anyone local wants to sell their used 2 - 3m foil please let me know.

How many kites can you afford ?

A 2m kite will leave you wanting for more power almost right away !
A 3m kite will generate some real usable power and move you on an ATB without huge winds. Even it will require a good wind. It sounds like you have a handle on the window and 4 line flying VIA the rev. so a 3 is not outragous even if your area is pretty windy. Power is your friend on an ATB. If you can only afford 1 kite then get a 5m and start off VERY slow. A 5m kite IMHO is the most all round usable size. If you usually have lower winds then the 5 is also not outrageous !

Around here the 5 is best all rounder. What is the best single kite size for Nor Cal ???

Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.
Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.

Peter Lynn :18m Phantom, 15m Synergy, 10m Synergy, 1200 Farc, 460 Sarc, 130 Tarc, 5m Peel, 4.2m , 6.4, 8.5 C-Quads, 3.5 LS2 single skin.

I would agree with that. It is a staple in anyones quiver. It could be THE quiver if skills and conditions match up for it. I regularly have conditions that are too much or not enough for a 5 meter though.

I'm going to purchase a 5m this month then I'll go from there. I may purchase another one in 2 months or sooner depends on how fast I get rid of my junks in the garage.

Dayam, someone just beat me to purchasing a MTB from craigslist.... lucky guy!.

For a really good power kite in the 4 or 5 meter size I would suggest looking into the new Scout from HQ. This kite comes with a control bar which is what you will want with your board. For the price it is an awesome deal and the kite rocks! Our shop guys have been flying them for a while now and everyone loves the new setup.

3 Months later... after a scape on my forearm, bruised right hip and thigh, sore ankle, 1 flat tire on my board and all of that happened in the month of May and June, I can truly say I love this sport.

I can now ride my board comfortably, fly my kite with without staring at it (though I still look at it one in a while), and roam around the field without stopping to change direction ( though I slow down on turns).

What's next??? I want to learn how catch some baby air the progress to bigger air. For now, I just enjoy riding.

THANKS DAKITES for 3.5, 5 M kites and the kite killers.

Elkiter... I finally met you and I hope to see you more @ Shoreline.

Good to hear you are progressing. Check out how to jump at www.kitesurfingschool.org. The steps are the same on land.

Coming from a skiing background you may enjoy Coyote Rollerblades ? I know I DO !!!! You can pick them up on Ebay for around $150.

One thing though, if you have already flown stunters, effectivly trainers, why start with a smaller kite, wouldn't a 5m be a logical choice in this situation?

NPWfever,

I have both 5M and 3.5M. I actually bought 5M first then the 3.5M. Because of the wind condition where I fly, I used the 3.5M meter more than the 5M.

Most of my wipeouts were on the 5M when I first started to learn KGB.

Aces !!

I think he was taking everyones advise because he told me he had to have a 5m. I tried to suggest the 3.5, but he had to have the 5m. Correct me if I'm wrong 12get12, but you called me and ordered a 3.5 after a couple minutes on the 5m

Its all good now he has a good quiver 3.5m and 5m

I should have listened to Dakites and get the 3.5M first but it's all good because I now have a bigger kite for those wimpy winds.

I actually used it a few times recently but not at Shoreline.

Now I need a 2.5M.

after talking to elkiter lately it sounds like you have definitely graduated from noob ... especially since you have been flying aces this whole time. Now that you have the ace under control its time for de-power. You think your happy now, wait till you try a de-power with your board
