Spreadder bar

Can someone tell me the reason these come in different sizes? What is the advantage or difference between flying a long or short spreadder bar? Is there a standard size?
for all harnesses?

Thanks.

I use a Dakine Hammerhead 10" on a Small Fusion Harness

the Kingpin Spreader looks sweet though.

I usse a 10" also and I have a 30' waist and use a large harness (I like it a bit roomy for my ski pants and all). They are different lengths to accomodate bigger or smaller people. If you have a small bar and no matter how much adjustment is in the harness you can't go out more than 8". Conversely, if you have a 12" bar and you are small you may not be able to snug your harness securely.

As ripsession... said, 10" is for those with standard to midsize builds, 8" is for smaller and likely women and 12" is for the pie eaters ;)

Hi-hack the thread for a second?

Mine says on a faded sticker (used harness/bar) "not for wind surfing" it is a "dakine" far as I know, it is what I was sold or bought whichever way you look at it :)~ Now does that fit into kite boarding on water or is that statement a standard disclaimer on it?

That statement is also on mine. I asked why that was there when I bought it and the shop owner said it was a dakine slam against windsurfers. I doubt that is the real reason but who knows? I don't windsurf so it doesn't really bother me one way or the other and I know the bar I have is suitable for salt water use so I doubt it has anything to do with the material - perhaps its the design and how it would or would not hold the strop on a winsurf boom.

If it holds a chicken loop it will hold a windsurfing strop/D-loop (I forget the name) There is no reason why you can't use a kiting bar for windsurfing, if anything it would be safer. Now using a windsurfing bar for kiting, thats stupid. They are not built to handle the ripping forces kites can apply, I have seen pictures of a hook that tore 90% of the way off in a jump.

I have two spreader bars, and it only says that on my Hammerhead one.

If you look at the Regular Spreader bar from the Hammerhead one you'll notice their is more curve and extends a bit. Maybe the Hammerhead isnt user friendly to windsurfers since they probably want to get in and out of the spreader bar quicker, and us Kiteboarders want that little extra curve that keep the chicken loop linked when we're 10'+ in the air and upside down.

Amoka is an avid windsurfer, I'm sure he's got more intel on windsurfer spreaders.

my Waist Harness is a X-small and the Spreader is a 6" i only got that cause thats what DAKINE suggested. at the time i didn't know any better, but having it on now. i know why. The Spreader if it was a 10' would just go beyond my frame :duh: .
