I hate dumb people

So I just got back from flying a little. I say a little because I had to call it short.

The field I was flying in is about the size of 4-5 soccer fields so its not small. Well there was a group of kids practicing on the opposite end and I was flying on the other. Well about 15 min. into me flying a girl (about 9 years old) and her dad decided to let her ride her gas powered mini bike ALL OVER the field. She even drove right through the practice.

About 5 minutes later, as my kite was down and I was taking my KS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s off, she drives right over the lines. I stopped her and told her in a very nice way to watchout for the lines and to not drive between me and the kite. Well she drove right over to her dad and told him. He comes trotting right over like he was about to kick my ass.

He began right away asking me what my problem was with his daughter. I explained to him that her driving over the lines can damage them and that they are $100+ new. He jumpped down my throught right away telling me I had no right telling his daughter where she can and can not ride, and if I spent $100 on some stupid string I was an idiot. I asked him if he saw his daughter ride through the soccer practice and his reply was "so what its a public field."

I simply said I was was done talking to him and told him to kick rocks and leave me alone.

About 10 min. later a cop car showes up and the officers let him know that motor vehicles such as his daughter motorcycle are not allowed there. He said "well what about that ass hole flying that gay ass kite?" They simply told him a kite is not a motor vehicle :P

They waited around until he left and I began packing it up. One of the cops told me I could stay that what Im doing is fine. I told him it was dinner time and was getting ready to go anyway. He then keept me there about another 5 or 10 minutes asking me about kite stuff :spin:

Just thought I would share.

Im thinking one of the soccer players must have called the cops because I saw one of em talking to the dad also and they had a few heated word too.

And I must say I do agree with both of the obove statements :)

This reminds me of a story when one day I was flying on the beach at Jekyll Island with another fellow and some pack of young teenagers started taunting him with stupid dispariging comments. I thought nothing of it but I guess it bothered him. Well along comes the Georgia Highway Patrol in their 4x4 that they use to patrol the beach and this fellow actually flags them down to talk to them about the kids.

I was suprised. I'm recently from New York City and while I have a lot of respect for NYPD, I'm not sure they would bother with such a matter unless perhaps violence was immenent.

Well dang; one of the officers got out of the truck and went over to sternly lecture the kids, who stood bolt upright with "yessir" written all over their faces.

The officers drove back over to us and told us that they had set the kids straght. Apparently one of the arguments they made to the kids, besides the respect deserved to elders, was that other folks not so kind as us might have hurt them (with the implication that they would have deserved it).

Yeah, things are different in the South and I gotta love it.

(and I have trained both the GHP and the local fire/ rescue not to drive over my lines)

Good story Angus!

Sure sounds like there are some cool cops down there. Don't think they would do the same in L.A. But of course, there was this one time that some stunt flyers were flying there kites several hundred feet in the air. Helicopter came over and told them to bring down there kites...they were in the flight path. So next day, I'm kiting and two cops drove over to me...I'm thinking,,,oh no this can't be good.

Turns out...spent about 20mins talking to them about kite buggying....really cool guys!

Guess you just never know.

Last week a few park rangers walked up to me while I was flying at my local static-flying spot, and told me I couldn't fly there anymore, due to county ordinance against kite-flying.
I'm extremely bummed, but I have to say they were very sympathetic, and even said they were sorry to have to eject me, and that I wasn't bothering anyone.

Ah well. But yeah, there are nice LEO's and not-so-nice ones. We're all human.

Yup. We moved to NC from Hawaii (after spending time in California and Ohio) and I've got to say the South is definitely way ahead in the "respect for elders" department. That plus we've found that the average Southerner tends to be more polite than people we've met up North and West. Not saying everyone is that way, but in some ways it seems like we stepped back in time 20 or 30 years (and I mean that in a good way).
