Getting Pulled Out Of Bug?


Okay, so heres the deal, the only 2 kites I have ever buggied with are my 5.5m NPW9b and my 8m Ace, actually thats a lie, I used my 3m once, in high wind, and almost died, cuz its a 2 line. But I can never seem to stay inside the buggy, I have side rails on it, probably about 10" up from the bottom of the seat, sits right against my rib cage right below my armpit. So I don't think thats the culprit. But it seems to be the worst with the 8m Ace, so I guess it could just be a lifty kite, but it still happens with the NPW9b, Which is not a lifty kite at all, so am I keeping the kite too low to the ground?


HELP!!!!

I'm gonna start hitting the buggy soon, and taking it easy, so I want to know what's wrong.

I would actually think you have it too high .. or you bring it up to high when you turn. Does it happen in a turn or just going straight ?

Unless it's pulling you out sideways in which case I'd think you're not pointing downwind enough for your current forward rolling speed (never having buggied before but been peeled off the ATB many times for the same reason).

It happens when I'm going straight, I usually don't make it to the turns. lol I am getting pulled out and over the side rail, not up. I'll try pointing more downwind next time I get out.

what size is the axle on your buggy? I used to have a problem getting thrown (buggy flipping sideways) because my axle wasn't wide enough (went from 41/2 ft to 6ft) - that solved my side dumping problem - I then had problems being overpowered and ejected on turns as DAKITEZ mentioned. So I guess my question is: is the buggy getting pitched over or are you? If you're getting pulled out of your buggy sideways and the buggy's not pitching over, then your assumption would be correct - your siderails are too low (if you can - lower your seat more).

I have a 4 foot axle, and the siderails are prob too low, but ive seen far lower, and I could probably add height to the siderails. If I drop the seat more, i'd hit tufts of grass, and that seems harmless but with no padding, or a plate, at 25mph, they hurt!!!!

if you're flying overpowered, bring the kite lower and also more the edge of the window

here's some visual aid too: i bring the kite up and down, than control the height, and release a little brake tension so it moves more to the edge. HOLD ON --> GO FAST!!!

Why was the kite hitting the ground over and over in video 7? It looked like the wind was howling and you have like a 2.5-3m kite out. Were you just at the ragged edge of control in those winds?

Is the lake bed really abrasive? I'm sure you didn't go with threadbare tires. How long did tires last there?

Sounds like the kite's a little too far back in the window. Too much brake? Are you getting hit by gusts when you go over? If overpowered, switch to a smaller kite or temporarily turn the buggy downwind to absorb the gust and reduce lateral pull.

If your center of effort is too high then I can see this happening on a reach.

Are you using a harness or flying by hand only? If your using a chest harness or just brute strength, I can see the force of the kite rolling you out of the buggy and dumping you on the ground.

Try/Buy/Borrow a seat harness, get used to hooking in and out BEFORE you get in the buggy. Use a small kite first to get used to the harness, then size up.

Now if you already have a seat harness and are using it properly (I made this mistake for way too long) you're on your own.

The lake bed is very abrasive on kites, tires and people. In the #7 vid I am sure that the kite has holes in it from scraping the lake bed many time. You can bald your tires in a day. It just dempends on how much power sliding you do.

lol ... that was a funny video. I was having technically issues with my line lengths, and bridle adjustments. i got that Butan 2.5 one week before NABX, and decide to set it up there. Bad Idea. Thats what a kite looks like when improperly tuned flies. ROFL.

i swear its all kite this time, not flying ability. :saint:

yah, the ground is hard / rough / feels like sandpaper. like what Kitemaker said, you can go through tires like crazy.
i sure paid the price of not tuning my kite ahead of time on a nice grassy field. brand new kite now looks like a 5 year old kite with many many holes. oh well, it will be my desert kite now.

IMO, going by your quiver:

5.5 NPW and your 8M Ace ... this would cover your moderate to light wind range.

i found the best sizes for the average person is 3 / 5 / 7

for the larger riders: 3 / 4 / 6 / 7-8

whatever you fly, just get your butt down there this year. looking forward to meeting you. i wanna see that smile on your face when you hit max speed. i had good memories of Strasher coming up to me in the casino letting me how fast he hit sitting in that Rockville.

bring your small kites, and save up for a Libre Full Race / Hardcore too.

last year, all i used what a 2.5m and 3.1m. eli (Yak 4.0) and jim (RM+ 4? 5?) where both crazy fast.

I can't really speak for the NPW, and I seem to have an early Ace that is different from many of the new ones. I found a similar problem when I flew my ace. I had to keep in on the deck to keep from being lifted out of the buggy. My Ace has silly lift and is a slow flying kite it would sit 90 from me in the buggy and not forward at all. This caused the the force of the kite to not translate into speed but into side pull. My buggy resisted this but I didn't. You can likely mess with the ace to decrease the angle of attack. I just stopped using it, I'd rather fly the fiddle with it.

That's exactly what happens to me, I have alot of trouble converting the side pull to movement. and often wind up just getting ripped out before I can even get going. I think the Ace is just too lifty. What about the 11m S-ARC? I haven't flown it yet, but I don't think it's too lifty, and being an ARC, it has a pretty small projected area.

What are thoughts on using that? I don't mind flying depower in the bug, so if you were basing the above statements off thinking I wanted fixed bridle, it really doesn't apply, I really don't like fixed that much, hell, I converted the Ace to depower.

Personally i have never tried an arc so I have no useful opinion there. Speaking for myself I have a smallish beach with a lot of walker and such so my bugging is moderate. I just don't have enough space to be a true speed freak :no: I am also not much of a freestlyle guy either. I tend to like the middle of the line kites. I love my accesses They are mostly perfect for 90 percent of what I do. Give the arc a try, with out knowing much (anything) about them I would wonder at the turning speed. I guess I am just saying I avoid the lifty kites, they just aren't my style.

your arcs would be fine too for kitebuggy. a lot people use them for the buggy ... see photos of nabx.

if i recall, markite / action jack ... can shed some light for you on that.

What size is the biggest size kite you can really buggy with? Keep in mind I'm on grass, and have a fairly small field, so I really cant get cranking.

I have a fairly small beach too I use my 10 m access a lot I have used a 14m LEI a few times I have been meaning to try my 18.5 but I just have not bothered yet. If it flies the ten will as well, the drive to try it just isn't there.
