MisFits Flat 9/13-9/16?

I'll be in Carson City, NV next weekend with the wife and kids for a different event. We are thinking of camping over-night Mon. 9/15, and heading home on Tue. 9/16.

For those who don't know, MisFits is a private wind-powered vehicles only dry lake, which hosts a number of NALSA events each year. It is strictly a pack-it-in pack-it-out leave no trace venue with nothing there but smooth playa. The dry lake is located in Stagecoach, NV. But I consider the closest civilization to be Dayton.

Map is and coordinates are >here<.

If you are interested in meeting up, PM me or reply in this thread.

Hello Goereo
I am going to be in South Lake Tahoe the 20th-27th. Can you give me more info on the Dry Lake bed. Are there restrictions on going there? I do not have a buggy yet but will be bringing my kite with me to fly.
Thanks
Brian

MisFits is fenced off with barbed wire to keep the ATVer's and off-roaders from tearing up the playa. Land sailors and kite buggiers in-the-know have the combo to the gate. There are "MisFits Fridays" from 4-7pm, that I have yet to attend, that are open to all interested in land sailing. I hope you can be there on the 26th and report back your findings.

Take US50 E towards Fallon, NV. Just outside the little town of Dayton and as you enter Stagecoach, there will be a bumpy dirt road to the right called "Break-A-Heart". There will be a gate and sign on the left about a mile down.

Hello Greg
Is there a phone # I can call to get the combo? I just got my first buggy today and will be heading to Tahoe this Saturday. I would love to meet up with someone in the area to show me the ropes of buggin.
Great pics. Also can I just walk in and not open the gate? Or do I need someones permission to go there?
I will be there for the Friday night event for sure.
Thanks for the directions
Brian

I've only seen 2 other buggiers there, and it was freak accident. I guess there are more land sailors there, and I haven't had much luck with those guys. I'm sure you could walk in pretty easy, if you wanted. Don't take this the wrong way, but not knowing you or your skills, I'm a bit hesitant to give out the combo. I'd feel pretty bad if you hurt yourself there, alone. Having some seat time at the beach, and more important still was having some pros near by my first time on the playa was a life saver.

Sure you wouldn't rather learn the ropes of kite buggying over at Sunset Beach with the likes of Jon Ellis and Eli? Those guys are pros and right in your back yard. Sand is soooo much more forgiving than playa, and the wind is much smoother at the beach for a beginner too.

I will get out to Sunset Beach once I get back from Tahoe in about 1 to 2 weeks. I hope to hook up with some experienced buggy riders. But I am going to be in Tahoe for a week and would like to try out the buggy. Do you think a 2m pansh legend would be to big of a kite to use for learning on the playa. I figure if I don't feel comfortable riding the buggy there I can just fly the kites standing. But I do want to give the buggy a try.

I will have my motorcycle riding jacket and helmet on for protection that should help to keep my skin on.

2m could be too big, 7m could be too small. It all depends on your skill and what the wind is doing at any given time. My first time out on the playa, a dust devil snuck up behind me as I was putting back to camp with my 3m up high as I was coming to a stop.

It's funny to look back on now. But at the time, getting lifted head-high out of my buggy and dropped some 10-20 ft away from my buggy was a bit unnerving to say the least.

Now we refer to it as "the time Greg/I got abducted by aliens". :alien:

Do you know if there will be kite buggiers on the friday night meet up? Maybe i can get some tips from them on getting started. I am very excited to get in a buggy and give it a try. I have all the equipment to get started but it sounds like it is to dangerous to get out and give it a go on the playa without some instructions. I will be in tahoe for a week and was looking forward to giving the buggy a go. maybe I will just bring the kites and leave the buggy at home to head to sunset and get someone to help me out on getting started safely when I get back to Oregon. Anyone in Tahoe who buggies willing to help a noob to get started?

Well I made it down to this lake on Friday night for the meet up. Not a soul showed up. Just me and my entourage. The Wind was DEAD. I did get the kite up in the air for short bursts. stuck around for about 1 hour and then packed it in. Did not see any other Person out there. maybe next summer when I go to NV I will get some wind and meet some kiters.

misfits is a nice spot, I've been there a couple times - used to work out at NATC. there's some nice terrain way back to the right from the gate with the combo, nice mounds poking up out of the playa about 3 feet tall. i got hurt one day on a mtn board though, haven't been back since.
